to return or not to return

Hey Angie

When you write it sounds like you have the enormous mountain to climb. your sup has said to do two hours a day and you say you must, MUST do more. These thoughts are not healthy!! Do two hours, then stop. Doing a PhD is sooooo hard and you seem to talk like it should be easy and you are rubbish for not being able to meet the challenge at the click of a finger. I suffer depression too, though episodal not chronic and sympathise with your predicament. I am also always very unsure and underconfident and always feel like a fraud. However, I think these issues are 'me' and also so much of what may make me able to work at such a high standard. What I am saying is, I have really tried to turn something potentially debilitating into having a 'point', you know? You can do it Angie! but ONLY, only if you want to. If you don't want to you can work out what transferable skills you have and get a great CV. Good luck x

I'm sleeping through my PhD!

ah ha! sorry Shani I did misunderstand. :P

Well said Aloha!

I'm sleeping through my PhD!
J

yeah, coffee is the obvious alternative shani! Coffee is only temporary though and will also make you feel more tired after the effects have worn off. So half an hour chill time in a nice bed when the body naturally seeks to slumber (late avo... siesta anyone?!) makes me work much longer and wakes me up more naturally! Usually I only feel snoozy when I've overexercised tho so am talking of very rare situations! I just sympathise with Beverley's sleepyness.

I think I understand where you are coming from. I don't sleep in the day but sometimes if I am completely snoozy at around half four (slump time) then I will have half an hour timed nap, get up have a coffee and work through till 7. Generally though if there is no reason for it I go out and exercise - not exercising makes me sleepy! I used to sleep a lot at uni as an undergrad though I think that was avoidance as much as anything! Are you happy in your work?

What do you do in study "breaks"?
J

I tend to be working away then all of a sudden just get up and wander off. Sometimes I will know why and secretly I have been thinking about making tea for a while and then whoo! just get up and off. Other times I can be walking off from my desk and not have a clue where I am going. Generally when can't rememeber which file to put work in when I am saving something (even though have been saving every ten mins for however long!)I know it is break time. I am not disciplined enought to take regular breaks - I seem to be either on a permanent break or working all the time... !!

Yeeeeaaaa I passed my viva! - so how did it go?
J

WOWWWEEE! yayaya well done! Good luck in all you do next!

twas the night before my viva when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
J

Good luck! I hope it has gone well for you.

starting to write up - need help!!!
J

I wouldn't really start with an introduction... whenever I do I find that I have to go back and rewrite it after I have done the rest because things change! Generally though you must know something, so write that. Just write what you can and you will find you'll get into the flow. I write waffle too, so am ruthless at editing and have built up an academic thesaurus that enables me to write three words in one. Be very critical about sentence structure too. Good luck!

First year transfer meet today...
J

Hey guys

So I handed in the chapter a week ago and have been like a cat on a hot tin roof waiting for the transfer meet which is today. This morning. Am so nervous! I read my chapter over the weekend and it is RUBBISH! So bad, I would mark it 62%. The ideas are good, (tank da laird) but the writing style is sooo awful! so I am prepared for them to send me away to rewrite and come back another day.

Wish me luck!

Yeah, I don't think many people would think that being naked was necessarily a barrier to having fun...

Thank goodness for wireless broadband...

I have an image of the trees at uni being full of naked postgrads like those kids in sound of music. Ooh, I would most like captain von trapp to sing me down from my tree! hehe.
