chrisrolinski's last month of the thesis progress thread!
K

Good luck Chrisrol! I've always been intrigued to know what area of history you're researching.. (I'm literature but from things you've said I think we might be looking at a similiar time period). Tell me to mind my own though if you like :-)

How much reading do you do during a literature review

Hi Iolande,

Don't panic! 10 papers in a week seems pretty good going to me. And of course you can dismiss papers with reason- that's what you're meant to do, in fact! You can't read everything in the world so you need to be wise with your time. You can still put those in your biblio, as you have looked at them but not extensively. And it will take more than a week to write your lit review ;-)

paper request! vet hist 1990 (yes, that old!)
K

I think the problem with ILL's Jepson is that they take a while to deliver and sometimes you need the paper ASAP.

Afraid I couldn't get it for you either Chrisrol, sorry.

What are your plans?
K

This has probably been covered elsewhere so apologies in advance.

I'm interested to know what people intend to do in the first few months after you submit. I started my PhD at 21 with no savings. I'm planning by the end to have saved enough to support me for around 2-3 months after I submit, or in case I go over schedule. I can't see me being able to save much more than that but it's not going to leave me much time. I'm planning to submit next October, so far I'm on track to do so and my supervisor has said that he will make sure I do. I am sure I won't walk straight into an academic job or a postdoc, even though I would love to and will apply during my final year. So what do I do? Start applying for non-academic jobs during the last couple of months and hope and pray somebody decides to take me on immediately after I submit? (I would then try and find time to prepare for my viva/ write/apply for academic jobs while I was working- tough call, I know).

I'm going to have this conversation with my sup soon I think, but I'd like to know how other people are planning to do it.

holidays?
K

Quote From algaequeen:

No holidays for me, but I will be going to south of france to do my writing up whilst living with my boyfriend. I don't know if this is good or bad though, i think I'd feel less sad about sitting in all the time when it's doing the pretend-summer thing over here, I think it may jsut sicken me living in a super nice place with no chance to actually get outside and write up....
However it's my birthday after I submit so I'm definitely doing something! Rome perhaps.... :-)

Wireless internet AQ! Sit in the garden (or front steps if you must)

holidays?
K

I'm going to Finland for a conference in September and am going to try and stay for a few days longer. Does that count?! Also maybe Paris for my birthday, fingers crossed.

Who owns your work?
K

I don't know either! I'm humaities and funded by my university. Presumed it was me but shall find out.

Well seeing as you're all so good at relationship advice...
K

Sorry Dan, but he's stringing you along. If this guy really liked you he would keep in touch. Backing off might make him more keen but would you really want to be with someone who wasn't sure about you? Or wasn't sure enough to make the effort?

I'm speaking from bitter experience here :-) Cut him out completely and save yourself the heartache in the future.

Quick help please!
K

Thanks all,

Finally worked out that there were some rogue footnotes in there- I'd deleted them in the notes but not in the body of the text so they were just coming up as gaps. Thank god I realised! Anyway, work is IN and I'm going to lie down in a darkened room.

Quick help please!
K

Thanks, it's all single-spaced just occasional huge gaps between notes I can't get rid of. I hate Word!

Quick help please!
K

Footnotes!

How doyou get rid of random spaces in between them in Word 2007? It won't let me delete.

The nocturnal workers' thread
K

I've not been to sleep tonight. My work load is utterly ridicuolousat the moment. :-(

ridiculously off topic but...
K

Hey AQ,

I wasn't sure what advice to give you so was waiting to see what others said first but realised that was quite cowardly :-) Firstly, don't feel bad about posting on here, that's why it's called 'off-topics'! We've all got to *know* eachother a little bit on here so I think it's good that we can chat about non-PhD things aswell. How long have you been with your boyfriend? I find it really difficult to offer advice without knowing some specifics but I don't want to pry! Do you think he treats you badly? Or is it just that you have differences of opinion?

It's Done!
K

My post was directed at Karl for what it's worth- I agree that GM had been quite gracious in accepting people's criticism on this thread already.

Why would you reply to such an old thread?

And why is it so difficult to believe that some people enjoy their PhD's?
