Starting off PhD with a new project (from scratch)
K

Also set up a meeting w/ your supervisor and explain your project and decision making at this stage, is your plan workable and do you have good methods to build the foundation of your research on? Good luck!

Unless you used the methods and techniques during undergrad then you aren't expected to be an expert at this stage. Ask your lab mates for advice, chat about what your doing and what's going wrong.

Quitting the PhD at the Final Hurdle

You need an income so look for a job, any job. And you might not like it but get that extension and finish writing up. It may be of benefit later in your life to have a phd no matter how much you hate the process rn.

Acept Phd, then cancel again?
K

Sounds like your first choice will be taking you, maybe email your supervisor and state you have been offered another phd position but if he could confirm his intentions of giving you his post you can turn it down?

Very depressed over typos in Phd thesis...
K

If typos are the only problem in your thesis then you are golden. Seriously, take a list into the viva with you, correct them before getting it bound. Done. They won't care as long as it doesn't affect the results you give.

RR corrections list
K

It might sound hollow right now, but break it down chapter by chapter and section by section and just do everything that's asked and at the end of that you'll have your phd. Get it done, and move on. Good luck.

Advisor Stepped Down: Don't Really Know Why
K

Regardless of why he stepped down, if you have results and can write a thesis, what's preventing you from submitting? Surely you still have supervisors who can advise you with what you have left?

Industry Job help/general entry-level job help etc

But a phd, if funded, will offer you more training, the chance to publish, improve your employability and keep the bills paid for a few years. PhDs are hard, but they can be very rewarding. It's worth considering.

Any social scientists out there who use R?
K

If you know one software then learning another isn't always a benefit although R is free and has a good community for help out there. But to answer I use R for everything to keep the format of data the same.

6 months behind on everything!!
K

Fully funded phd post that started 6 months ago, but full time staff (and paid I assume) for those 6 months. That is a problem if you were receiving 2 forms of pay. Did they not just postpone your start date?

Any advice for a new start PhD?
K

If after only a few weeks the stress is having this bad an effect I'd suggest the phd is not for you. This time should be your most enthusiastic about your research and plans. Seek advice and help.

Issues with my referral
K

And just to add, if you do the corrections they ask for, you won't fail or be downgraded - I've never heard of that ever happening. So you shouldn't have any problem passing if you make the changes they want.

The best advice I can give you is to do the corrections exactly as they've been outline for you, resubmit and then move on with your career and life. University politics are hard to win, and decisions are hard to overturn.

Working time and location
K

Part of it is to prevent funded students then seeking full time employment. As long as you remain on campus and readily available (email) for last minute meetings your supervisor should be able to work with you on this.

Advice on choosing between PhD and Job after Masters
K

Why not apply for jobs and PhDs at the same time? I doesn't sound like you have either set up yet so keep your options open. PhDs don't make it easier to get jobs but you can always do one later if you take a job.
