I'm in humanities and coming to the end of my first year. I absolutely LOVE footnotes. They can be little digressions, expansions of important(!) info, or simply references to important works.
At this drafting stage of chapter 2 I just use them for going off on tangents. Better to have too much than too little.
I think there is so much snobbery around (not talking about you cyc!) regarding Universities with good rep and bad rep. At the end if the day it is the individual that is doing the PHd, not the university. Ok, there might be logisitical decisions regarding labs and stuff if its a science phd, but the way I look at it as a humanities student is that its ME writing the thing and so the responsibility ultimately ends with me. As long as you have a supervisor who is supportive and gives you attention (but doesnt need to necessarily be an expert in the area you are writing about) then that should be the priority.
(Sorry about the rant!)
Thank Wisma.
Yeah Ive gotten hold of a few pdfs that go over the process but I was just wondering about the real life logistics of it, i.e., fitting it in around the important things in life like watching Curb, watching Revista de La Liga, and of course the thesis!!!
OK
So Ive been offered a review for an important journal in Europe.
Has anyone any tips of how to approach it in terms of fitting it in with the real work (the thesis!).
How long do I really need to write this thing?
Any planning tips???
Thanks
LD
My uni doesnt have a subscription to PEP web and it will take a week for them to arrive from the BL. Can anyone help me out please?
Im looking for:
"Freud in America", Pollock, 2003.
"Freud in America", [xxxxx ], 2004.
"Oedipus in America", Demos, 1978.
If anyone can help then please PM me.
Thank you so much.
It's funny how a quite innocent thinking out loud comment gets jumped upon by Phd students LOL. Must be the coffee and lack of late night romance. Then it turns into a "mines is bigger than yours" debate. I was merely wondering how one word can mean different things to different people. Is this what cyber bullying is?
I always wonder when people say I've a 100000+ word "first draft". Drafting to me is a continual organic process and occurs daily. I wrote a 20000 word first chapter and prob have near 30 drafts of that saved on my computer. Drafting is a strange business but I do prefer the reeading and rewriting parts compared the blank screen of death.
I'll send the titles of the articles I'm looking for.
Hi
Could anyone please get access to articles on Pep-web.org? My uni doesn't have a subscription to their database and I really need 2 or 3 articles.
If you can help please send a pm and I'll email you the articles.
Many thanks
I am due to give a paper at a conference in a couple of months.
They want a version of the paper submitted beforehand to circulate to the other people on the panel to help discussion after all the talks have been given.
My question is just how detailed the two versions need to be. I've been approached the circulated version as if it were for a journal, i.e. full footnotes, refs, and bibliography (which I wont have time to mention in my 15 mins of fame). Surely the two versions don't have to been exactly the same?
I'm really sorry to have to ask the forum for this but unforunately my institution doesn't have access to the journal "Society".
I'm looking for an article titled "Invisible Masculinity". Author is Michael Kimmel and details are below.

I sent my abstract over a month ago and just received word that I've been accepted to give my first paper at quite a prestigious uni in Europe!
The paper will basically be the first chapter of my thesis that I've just finished (I started my phd in feb) so it'll be great to get feedback about what I've written before my differentiation in October.
I'm going to enjoy these few weeks of excitement before the nerves kick in!
