we have the standard statutory 4 weeks plus university holidays like Christmas, when the uni is closed but some supervisors expect people to work then too. With how the funding works we can be a bit micromanaged, expected to be at our desks the whole time. I got my supervisor to get me a dispensation for this because I find my deskspace very distracting and live far from the uni so working at home a much better option. Means I can be flexible about which days I work but still couldn't head off anywhere on holiday.
usually when i watch the real tv it's either because I want to escape for a while or just have some noise over lunch or something, then anything goes like Lionman, Supernanny, how clean is your house etc. Love watching the big bang theory and boxsets of things like battlestar galactica and such :$
Sounds like a busy day for you! I've a (long) meeting and seminar so it'll be a broken day for me. Wish I had time to clean home, it really needs it ! Family time was with both sets of parents, siblings and one hyperactive nephew. It was lovely but probably could have done with the sleep instead this weekend. Maybe we could each get a robot to make us tea? They don't take quite as much energy as a child :-) Or at least they take it as electricity.
Hope the mountains of words were sufficient distraction for your sup. I find cakes work well for mine :-) Wish I could come up with mountains of words, I'm more likely to agonise for hours over a page of words.
well done on the writing Eska, hope work is nice for you this week and you get the re-drafting done on time. KC your goals seem like really hard things to do, figuring out sources and chapter plans but you also seem to be motoring along through them - well done!
So for my squirming (you're not alone phdbug!) my goals for today were:
Understand the two cases of theorem so far - DONE (most important case only)
Write these up and type it in - DONE (half typed only)
Rewrite the latest case in original terminology HALF DONE
Check the details of paper X NOT DONE
Try to generalise to the next case! HALF DONE
I've another few hours left today but have meeting and seminar, I'm exhausted and I have dancing later too so I'd say that's my lot for today.
Exceeded my writing and tomato goals for last week which I'm proud of. Not sure I'll be able to keep that up this week though, life commitments getting in the way.
Sounds like a really tough day ahead of you tomorrow. If it's any consolation, I'll be up early working like mad too. Got really stressed after dinner about getting things done on time. Big long conversation with himself helped me gain a bit of perspective but did take a lot of my time so I'll probably have to work late tonight to get today's work finished. Hope we both have a good day of it tomorrow.
I'm working late tonight too. Supervisory meeting Monday and family dinner Sunday means tonight and all tomorrow I'll be working. Probably Sunday morning and late night Sunday too. Have to switch from reading texts though, starting to nod off. Keep at it!
I do the same with working through the breaks, it's really helpful. Or sometimes I finish the thought I'm on, let my mind drift for a few mins, stare out the window and then continue on :) I can't even imagine being able to write 200 words a day on my thesis so well done all of you!
Eska,
I had a similar morning, didn't get really going til lunchtime. But I've started with reading and working on some background material that I'll need for the next step and for my thesis in general. It's a nice break from the specific meeting-related work but will help when I get back to it later. Some reading or background work would probably be good for you too - help you use the time you have but let the draft settle.
