Sounds like you both naturally move at the fastest way to cover a long distance - alternating running fast and walking briskly. Great training for your heart !
My husband has made a regime of exercises for me to do each evening that gets harder every evening. He does 4 times what I do so there's great fun incentive! Only four days in but already feel stronger and firmer. Night off tonight because we're going dancing instead - can't wait!
Sounds completely do-able. Once you've the introduction re-drafted you'll be feeling much better.
As for money - when my friends were finishing / out of funding we used to take turns cooking for them or 'accidentally' cooking too much. Let your friends/family know your situation, most will be only delighted to give you a hand whatever way they can.
Quickest way to run away from phd for good is to finish it.
Can I come on board with this? I used to be pretty fit between yoga, running and dancing but that was years ago. Tried the uni gym but the hours were really bad and now I live too far away. otherwise it was pretty good, had loads of fun with the machines. Classes always scared me so I just snuck in and out. Nowadays the best I manage is the incidental bits of walking to/from bus stops and occasionally some social dancing. Thanks you for the motivation to get back to it like you! The endorphins, stamina and de-stress I found great during undergrad. Maybe I could try taking up yoga again. Good luck swimming!
If you mean a project from your undergrad then they probably won't want to see it in real life but will probably expect you to be able to talk about it and answer questions about it. Make sure to bring it up if it's something you are proud of and feel is relevant and they haven't asked. You can always post it on to them if they would really like to see it. Not a problem I would say, even for a masters project. Good luck.
Hello to all the new people! Hope you find this as useful as I do.
Well one KC on reaching almost all your goals. You're a great example.
Sorry for falling off the radar there. Monday meeting was a minor disaster. I think I was just burnt out and didn't like how the work dynamic had changed. So a write off of a week almost, til I met sup again and now I've a writing task for the next while, with daily submissions almost. Will be good for keeping me on track. Though after that relieving meeting I had guests coming for the weekend so housework and hosting took over. Hoping to get some good work done tomorrow. My goals are pretty vague til I've a chance to break it down but for the next few weeks I must:
Write up the chapter
Prepare as a paper
Submit abstract for talk to April workshop
Submit abstract of paper to major September conference
Send my sup daily pages of my writing.
Sometimes I think part of a phd is learning to live with guilt. The billions of things you 'should' be doing or being at the one time, despite being impossible we still feel guilty. I think goals and rewards are certainly a good way to deal with it in terms of time spent/ work accomplished. Also means you can do the things you like guilt -free because you've earned them, which keeps you sane.
Congratulations! You almost have my looking forward to mine. Had a really good time with my masters defence, even had some compliments on my graphs. I always thought the viva would be much scarier so it's exciting to hear it could be fun too. Thanks and well done!
Most universities require you to be registered for a minimum number of years before they will consider you for phd examination (i.e. accept your thesis). This would require lots of money in fees. Even if you were somehow able to get funding for this you wouldn't be able to use the work you did at the previous university as they generally part own the intellectual property of your research while at their institution.
try your best to concentrate on the thesis to get it submitted on time, whatever shape it's in then. Talk to an education/hardship officer in the college if there is one, and the student bank.
Best of luck.
all true.
also, while those close to us do get tired of being supportive all the time it doesn't mean they don't want to. When my boyfriend was going through writing up I found it very difficult to keep up my energy at supporting but I believed in what he was doing and understood and kept trying. Several years later he's now my husband and it's his turn ;-)
A jacket is always good. Easy to take off if you seem a little overdressed. Whatever you decide on make sure to wear it about the house a bit to get comfortable wearing it. Otherwise your panel will notice you seem uncomfortable. Also easier to pull of potentially overly formal clothes if you look comfortable in it, people just assume you dress that way. Good luck!!
hmmn there should be a good luck charm we can post.
well done people on all your achievements.
My house was in a pretty desperate state and had to spend yesterday frantically shopping, cleaning and cooking for the guests that were staying. Could have done with the work. Hope your rework goes well. Better realising now and being able to improve, which was only possible as a result of your recent work so congrats sneaks!
