Hi Squiggles,
Sorry you're having rough Sunday. I just wanted to say it sounds like you've done really well to get this far & only to have 6 months left, without the best supervisor support in the world.
Keep writing, keep focussed & remember you're the best darned Squiggles there is!
I hope the sun's shining where you are, Mog :-)

First Journal Club Talk- eep!!!

Hi Acidalia,

Have you presented yet? Mine was cancelled 1.5 hours before it was due to start! :-s

Hope yours went well, Mog

You got to do what you got to do to get your PhD

Here are the things that keep me going:
Visualising myself in the cathedral at graduation.
Working out what on earth to wear with the graduation gear - someone suggested white, but then I'd look like a P&O ferry docking in Dover!
Those mini post-its page markers - they're irresistible! I bought a new packet of 5000 in a pound shop the other day, even though I still have half the last pack left. Useful for messages too, like 'take cheese to work'.
Finding amusement in the possibility of being called 'Dr Mog' one day!
Telling myself that 80,000 words is just a 2000 word essay, every week, for 10 months - and I can do that.
Writing something every day - I'm (roughly) sticking to that & it feels OK.

Are you bored? Fancy doing (yet another) online survey?!!
M

Good luck Hannah, I hope you get all you need.

Software for quantitative and qualitative data
M

Hi all!
Does anyone know of software that can meaningfully analyse both quantitative & qualitative data at the same time? My supervisor says there is such a thing. Oh, & it needs to be Mac compatible too.
Thanks fab people! Mog ,-)

Interview Skills - Advice desperately needed
M

Hi Velony,

Is it possible for you to arrange an informal meeting with someone in the department you're applying to before the interview itself? I don't know enough about how the system works & can only speak from my own experience, but I contacted a professor to indicate my interest in doing a PhD, we met for tea & a chat & this sort of ended up as an interview.

I hope things turn out well for you, Mog :-)

PHD without Master

Hi!

Maybe it depends on the institution - I can only speak for mine, but I applied for a PhD without a masters & the university told me I had to take 2 masters modules within my first year of research.

I hope it works out well for you, Mog :-)

Three potatoes chatting about their future. One says "I'm going to marry royalty - a Jersey Royal!". The next says "I'm going to marry a King - King Edward!!". The third says "I'm going to marry Desmond Lynam because he's a common-tater".
Boom boom!!

First Journal Club Talk- eep!!!
M

Hi Acidalia,
I too am giving my first presentation at the end of this month, to a room full of academics, but I'm presenting on a topic I know well. I think if you don't know the subject, far from hiding your blushes, it might make them deeper! If you know the topic well you can anticipate questions & look good with your answers.
Otherwise, PowerPoints with pictures are always a good idea - gives your audience something to look at - and is there any possibility of audience participation?
Good luck (up)
Mog

What shall I do if no-one answers my on-line questionnaire?!
M

A big THANK YOU to all of you who responded here. I took all on board & now have responses coming in daily (up)
