Hi all,
I've been reading a lot on the '3 year' thing in PhDs in the Uk. What is the general trend though? do people actually end up submitting in three yrs full time? or does it spill on further? My question in specifcally abt full time students though. How far do other things impact..lets say part time work? Also, in the case of 3 yr phds, do people manage to get publications etc done in that period or do they just write the thesis?
Cheers!
Hey Bellaz!!
Which stage r u in? As in first yr just got over kinds, fieldwork/data gathering kind or writing up?
What you call "extended period of inactivity" happens to all of us, TRUST ME, and so often it happens when we dnt even notice it! There'll be times u feel u'r getting a lot done (but actually u'r doing random rubbish, remotely academic) and sometimes, u havent looked at papers or anything, but the idea's been at the back of your head...not suggesting its this way in your case...
anywway, now that uve identified the problem, get a schedule made, put in targets break up time into small doable bits. And YES YES YES get back in touch with the sup. Were u guys in the habit of emailing? Whatever was the mode of contact, do pick up the threads, and get yourself a schedule!
best!!!! :) and chin up!
I absolutely get the interdisciplinarity of topics! What I had meant was "new on the block" subjects, for instance media and communications studies, which are "at birth" a contributed effort by sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, economics and literature.
Uhmm..I dont think all the threads on this forum are meant for ONE person's sole benefit, for instance the tips list thread that seems to have a sticky for some reason...also, i've started, third, fortunately it IS useful, though the proof of this rests inside my head LOL, and fourth, no, i am not memorising anything R, left that habit way back in kindergarten...
Oh I see you want to transfer to the US. The US has a strong coursework component which I dont think they are willing to forego, so i doubt whether they wil consider non US or non Canada transfers as Euro or UK phds have a different format in that there isnt any coursework...still, you should totally check this out with people in a US program, or better still why dont you right to some grad prog administrator of the schools you are interested in working at and maybe they will sort it out best for yoU!
Again, this is so highly variable from paper to case that one cant say. In my instance, I had declined the offer at my university for another place in the US, bcos I hadnt been assigned to the person I wanted to work with. I went ahead with admission at that place, and suddenly in June I withdrew the moment this scholar offered to supervise me. It was way way way beyond the deadline for new applications etc etc. In this case, i had worked with this scholar for 1.5 months and I loved my interactions which made this decision so easy tat I left all that money in 2 secs.
So u see, it totaly depends on what your equation is. In any case I think I am confident that UK schools wont allow you to transfer, if you are from a non UK Phd.
