to do a PhD, or not to do a PhD for working in international development?

thanks for your advice everyone - much appreciated!

yes the fast stream is competitive - with lots of applicants and a very long application process. However, its based on aptitude tests so, in terms of what you have to do, then its ok - dont expect a grilling from a 3 person interview panel!

to do a PhD, or not to do a PhD for working in international development?
P

I want to pursue a career in international development. I already have an MSc in Public Policy which specialised in development issues. I am currently on the Civil Service Fast Stream (the graduate scheme for the senior civil service), not working in a relevant area, and have been asked to do a PhD by my former university.

I very much want to do the PhD, but it would mean taking a career break of 3-4 years. My worry with that is that it would not be as beneficial as getting some actual work experience under my belt and trying to get into international development via the civil service. The alternative is to do the PhD, get some field work/practical experience in the developing world, and then try and get employment in NGOs or back into the civil service.

Does anyone have any advice on this? Or similar experience?

Grateful for any advice given!

Cheers,

Pim
