hi frenchie I have to reply to your post. I was on a reserve list for my masters studentship. When they sent me the letter asking me if I wanted to go on the reserve list, I thought this was the CLOSEST I could get towards an european scholarship. I was also disappointed. But I said yes anyway. And then 1 week later, they offered me the studentship! For my phd application, I was also on reserve list for two scholarships.
Its not absurd to wait. But do look for other options while waiting.
Best regards satchi
hi Looie
I know it hurts, but actually what this person is doing (to you) is really a positive thing, she is behaving in a way to completely STOP any more of your feelings from building up. She is not sending conflicting signals, see, some people tend to be nice, and even after declining other people, they still behave nicely and kindly but unfortunately other people become confused as to "why is she still so nice to me" "maybe she likes me after all" "maybe I do stand a chance after all" and still continue to like these people.... and it gets a lot more complicated...
You will get through this. It may take some time but you will.
£1093 per month is sufficient if you live in a shared house; and split utility bills. But remember to bring more money when you first arrive, in case you need to put deposit for your accomodation or buy stuff. The first month is always hardest, I guess. For example, you might want to buy your own pots and pans, and your own duvet. These things may not be very expensive, but still, they add up to a lot.
hi Florence..
here is what I do to make myself write/work (better) at my computer..
I put on music which I used to listen during my schooldays (I mean..when I was a teenager).
It also brings back feelings of those good old days and puts me in the right frame of mind.
Set small goals first, like start to sit to work for 1 hour first, and go from there.
You'll be OK.

hi chris you sound like you have to write a Letter Of Motivation or Statement of Purpose.
Sorry I cant help, I'm not in Lancaster University Management School...
But I'm sure there will be other (useful) responses for you
Good luck in your research

I am doing phd in a totally different field from my Masters.
To get full knowledge on food tech, spend more time on it. Allocate time for it.
Whether to get a job in pharmacy or food industry--if I were you, I wouldnt worry about this. Do this: LIVE IN THE PRESENT. Concentrate on your phd now, and learning about food tech, since you are already doing a phd in food tech, why worry about pharmacy now.
The first supervisor I ever had, told me this: "Do your masters because you want to do your masters". He taught me this important lesson which I value until today. Money and career are also good motivators. But first be motivated by what you want to do and what you have passion for, and the money and career will somehow come along.
If money is your sole motivator (for this phd), your happiness may not last.
If you regret changing fields, that is another different thing. It is entirely up to you.
Your 1st year phd is fine, why worry. If you really want to go back to pharmacy, decide whether you want to continue food tech or you can even go back to pharmacy AFTER this phd. Make up your mind.

hi. Sorry to hear about your cat. I guess its not easy being away from your SOH. My phd friends are all busy with themselves too. And the non-phd friends I have, I like them, they are wonderful people but sometimes the chemistry is just not there (for example I miss my bestfriend, and shes back home in Lagos). I'm also alone most of the time.
Do something nice for yourself? As for me, today I'm going window-shopping.
Just a couple of hours walking. I'll be ok. You be ok too, ok?
love satchi
