What cheers you up?

I agree, rabbit is nice. Especially in a stew (up). That tends to counteract their natural leaness.

Lost in my PhD: Lack of Support (I think).
S

I can't speak for any other disciplines, but I was asked what I wanted to do, told what training my sups think would be necessary and then left to get on with it myself. Mostly I just taught myself, but I have also been on a few training courses. From my experiences in the social sciences, you just get stuck in and, if you need help, it is up to you to ask for it, not for others to offer.

Interview presentation: big deal!
S

I read the title like it was intended sarcastically - it's so, like, big deal!

I kinda think showing a powerpoint presentation on your life would be kinda weird, but doing one and printing it out for your own notes may help you organise your thoughts.

Quote From sneaks:

I've eaten a small bowl of cinnamon cereal mmmm - but in my defense, it was the last of the packet so onto boring cereal tomorrow :-(

Were they Cinnamon Grahams (or whatever they're called now)? I only ask because I bought a pack the other week due to walking past them in the shop and remembering them from when I was a child.

I could not believe how sugary they are! I lurve cinnamon, but bloody hell it's meant to be a cereal!

I know that the three S's that make a man feel like a man again - a shit, a shave and a shower (in that order.) So maybe cheering someone up is like that. I know! The three P's - a pint, a pie and......a prostitute?

It could work. Maybe a pint, a pie and another pint.

best field for doing PhD??
S

Politics....it owns all. Not sure that Chemistry is helpful though, maybe you could do a Masters in Politics and then move on from there. You really should have thought about this before.

Research Methods Texts - What would you buy if you weren't paying?
S

If we're going a bit more subject specific, Politics has two de facto core textbooks for research. You could probably get away with them in Geography, I'm sure there's some crossovers.

Research Methods in Politics / Burnham, Lutz, Grant and Layton-Henry
Theory and Methods in Political Science / Marsh and Stoker

Next Tuesday should hopefully mark my successful return to climbing following injury and facilities closure due to refurbishment - I can't wait! Ooh, and I just remembered tomorrow is 7-a-side footy! Yay for sport! (robin)

Research Methods Texts - What would you buy if you weren't paying?

These are quite good, particularly the second one.

Qualitative researching / Jennifer Mason
Ways of knowing : competing methodologies and methods in social and political research / Jonathon W. Moses and Torbjørn L. Knutsen.
Case study research : design and methods / Robert K. Yin

Bank Holidays
S

To add a new element to it, me and my office mates (yes, we;re first years) went and got hammered today. Is it still okay to take next week off? :-)

58 minutes and counting

Good luck! Here, have this (sprout).

When the time comes, you will know how to use it.

Bank Holidays
S

Just trying to justify a bit of weekday drinking next week. So, do people take bank holidays off? Since technically every PhD day is both a holiday and a work day, I'm in favour of getting very drunk and hopefully soaking up the sun.

Its Sunday, Its sunny outside....

Button, cheers for the Asda tip; I feel better having not bought it today.

The sizes are a bit different though. I quite like having the choice between tight and baggy....they're just too bloody long.

The new England shirt gives men more choice in size than is normal (it's done in inches across the chest, rather than S/M/L), so you can probably get him sorted with a nice fit....but you'll probably have to take him with you when you buy it. Sports Direct is selling them for £35 (or £38 if you buy it with "South Africa" written above the badge.)

After a bit of wandering around town trying to buy a new England shirt (I've got a choice of long and baggy or tight and a bit shorter. Apparently I'm not close to the build of the average football fan....in a good way, I think) I too am in the office. My arms are sticking to the desk...it's not nice.
