I think I will probably stay the course and try and get a PhD. I went out over the weekend and chatted to some friends, and also explored the area where I live, generally doing something different than thinking about my project.
Reading the posts on this site indicates that there will be periods where I am not feeling very confident about my project and other times when I am enjoying it.
I think the moral of this, for anybody else, is to just stick with it. It will be worth it in the end!.
Don't worry about asking what appear to be silly questions. I'm doing a PhD that involves a lot of mathematical modelling and I am liasing with the maths department. During my first meeting I asked about the possibility of deriving analytical solutions to the problem. This I was told would be virtually impossible(in his opinion)to what is a highly non-linear problem. What I'm trying to say is that you should ask everything to begin with, then as you understand the problem better, you'll find out the areas where there are limits to what can be achieved and areas that are ripe for research. No questions are silly in the beginning.
Hi!,
I have a BSc Maths 2:2 and an MSc.
I went for an interview and my supervisors(!) were happy with my qualifications.
I went to the interview with a few ideas about how I could do my project and generally tried to appear confident I was accepted a few months ago and have been up a couple of times to chat with them and I start next week!.
Hi,
I know how you feel. When I applied to do a PhD and I was ask to go go for an interview I felt quite excited. The interview went okay. I was asked how I would tackle various problems and gave the right answers. However when they wrote to me and offered me the PhD I began to doubt whether I was going to be able to cope. What if I couldn't find out anything new and original? Would they tell me half way through that there was no point continuing?. I have accepted the offer and start in September, so its fingers crossed.
