Bibliography is causing me problems
Avatar for sneaks

go to 'edit' then 'output styles' then 'new style' I think. Or I think you will be able to go into APA and modify it and save it under a new style.

Catalin bond - don't always trust downloading them from a database e.g. import to endnote from google scholar, as they often change the formatting. Most annoyingly into uppercase! I would go and have a look at the two refs you mentioned and manually change them back to the correct format.

Can't you make your own style in endnote, so it automatically changes all your entries? - i.e. if you want first name first/last.

Well at least it was memorable! Love the vintage dress - i'm just trying to work out if my budget can affort more than a dorothy perkins number lol. Will probably hate the whole thing as v introverted but never mind! can't wait for honeymoon and real holiday away from PhD - yay! although am worried that some major issue will come up with my data collection or something meaning I have to scrap the whole thing.

The wikipedia article says it is flattering for people who 'lack curvuture' but doesn't say it is unflattering for curvey people! I like to wear empire line, cos the empire line tops tend to follow those hags, trinny and susanna's rules for bigger busted people- if you are curvey, have a low neckline, with cropped/three quarter length sleeves (never sleeveless!). The empire bit means that it will lengthen your body if you are short (which is why I like it!) hence why this is my perfect ever dress for my wedding next year

Student Mortgages - advice and pointers please
Avatar for sneaks

With guarantor mortgages a parent can hold a mortgage in their offspring’s name. Once the young person’s income increases, he or she can then take on full responsibility for the mortgage.

Many mortgage lenders now offer guarantor mortgages. As with any mortgage, it is important to compare rates, fees and other features. It is important that financial advice is taken before committing to a guarantor mortgage.

I was checking the spelling of guarantor lol and found this

Guarantor mortgages – how they work

With a guarantor mortgage a parent or close family member can either cover the shortfall in the mortgage needed to cover the borrowers income or can cover the full mortgage amount. By covering the mortgage, or part of it, the guarantor is liable to make payments if the principal slips into arrears or defaults. For instance, if you earn £20,000 you could borrow £80,000. If the property you want to purchase is worth £130,000, there is a shortfall of £50,000 that the guarantor would cover. The mortgage lender will assess the guarantor’s income, current mortgage and other financial commitments to ensure that they can cover the loan amount.

The easiest way is to get a guarantor - someone who is willing to cover the payments if you can't. Ours is my bfs mum - they have to prove they can do this as well as their mortgage. I think they will let anyone get a mortgage with a guarantor as we had it when we were 19 and undergraduates.

Shame on you! - Jane Austen would not approve of your smockist attitudes! I love to float around like a crazy Darcy obsessed lady of the austen era - really don't want 'waists' to come back into fashion as will have to hold tummy in all the time - or go down the gym (god forbid!)

PhD Interview: Birmingham University
Avatar for sneaks

I was told to mention things like RAE in my interview, to demonstrate that I knew a little bit about the academic world.

They will probably be looking for enthusiasm as you need it to get through 3 years on one project!

Good luck with your interview I am sure if you are dedicated enough to come on here for tips then you will be fine!

Anyone doing a collaborative PhD?

hmm, yeah I'm hoping it will be good for jobs after its all finished, in that I haven't just worked in a university all my life - and true, I couldn't do it without the funding! Also, no scraping around for data as they provide it all.

hmm I have similar problems, I am often asked to do work that is nothing to do with my PhD which makes me slightly annoyed and also get people at uni moaning that I am never there and people in the organisation saying the same becasue I always seem to be in the wrong location at the wrong time!

Just thought I would ask how many of you are doing collaborative phds, i.e. with organisations. How are you finding the pressures of academic work and quasi consultancy!?

web surveys, online q's-your experience?

I have used surveymonkey many times and it is really useful. You do need to make sure that you set it up right at the beginning though, so your data comes out in the correct format - a few pilots usually work wonders.
