I kind of meet with the same problem, now i am trying to write up a report as i read the literatures. when you write down your ideas and the points you get from the previous work in a logical way, you cannot only enhance your understanding of the subject but make some new discoveries and find more problems that you need to make more efforts to ascertain.
i dont know why you think chinese students are only confined to themselves, i am a chinese, i get along with both my flatmates and my colleagues in office from different countries very well. I really think that part of reason we go abroad to study is to enhance our english and mix into different cultures to get a broader version of the world as well as study.
it happen sometimes, i suggest you contact directly to the office the funding is issued if your university cannot do this for you. but actually i really think some supporting staff in your university should do this for you because it's their duties to help out any student
