Want to do a PhD - any advice please?
S

I think quite a few people on here do that. I can't really advise on that aspect (I'm an FT PhD) but I'm sure they can.

I know Birkbeck in London do p/t PhDs but you're limited to whatever their specialisms are (assuming they cover your field). The others may be more helpful

third class in law .is my career over ?

Victor, if you're based in or around London, try Birkbeck College. They do PT degrees with evening lectures, allowing you to work in the daytime.

To PhD or not to PhD ?
S

Perhaps in Germany but rarely in the UK. If Finance is your thing then a PhD is a no-no - it will do nothing for your career prospects in that industry. Why? Because the financial institutions like untrained graduates who have talent but who they can train their way (rather than have to undo the isolationist lifestyle a PhD entails). Therefore graduates are viewed more highly than doctors in that type of industry. Of course there will be exceptions, but a PhD in finance is only worthwhile if you're going into academia with it.

As a former Management consultant myself (also then in London), I've been through what you're going through.

In terms of topics, obviously doing something that interests you is an essential prerequisite. However, in practical terms have a look at what is being advertised on this website. Also have a look at individual universities and their suggested PhD topics. Then talk with the prospective supervisor direct. In some cases, it is possible to get "blue sky" PhDs where you propose your own topic and find a supervisor for it. However, these are hard to get! Good luck!
