Post-PhD Data Ownership help?!?!?
T

Hi

I am a former PhD student who has moved away from academia (and has no intention of ever going back!)
Firstly I wanted to know if I have ownership of the data in my thesis i.e. am I the only one who can use it for publications and does someone need my permission to use the data for their own publications or presentations? Basically supervisor is wanting to use my data to write publications himself whereas I don't want to do this at all.
Secondly (and the thing that has really annoyed me) I have found an interview my supervisor did with an online magazine discussing a paper I wrote where there is no mention of myself and it says it is his research conducted by him! Is he allowed to do that and pass off my work as his own without even acknowledging me?

Thanks

Is it necessary to publish papers

It looks good on your CV when applying for jobs but makes no difference in the viva. I had a paper published from my thesis in a good journal, it's been downloaded 34,000 times and received a lot of media coverage across the world. But my examiners are still making me do corrections on the published work which seems absolutely pointless. As long as you meet your examiners personal opinion on what a PhD should consist of you'll pass regardless of publications.

Waiting For Corrections to be Sent?????

Quote From Jamie_Wizard:
Sorry to hear that. I think two weeks is normal, anything beyond that seems strange. I would contact your examinations office. In any case, I think the clock starts ticking from when you receive the report, and not from the date of your viva. Best wishes, Jamie.

Thanks for this. I've actually just had a look at the post viva form which examiners fill out and it says I should have got them within 24 hrs after the oral exam. So I'm going to have to into campus on Monday and try and sort it out. It's been such an awful process, it took them over 2 months to set a date for my viva, then the viva itself was extremely bad and now this. Hopefully I'll get it sorted on Monday :)

Waiting For Corrections to be Sent?????

So I got major corrections in my viva which was 3 weeks ago. I'm not happy with this outcome and the fact that my viva went on for 7.5 hours!
Anyway even though I'm not pleased I still have to do these corrections but 3 weeks later I haven't received them. My internal examiner seemed shocked when I told him I hadn't got them yet as does my supervisor. I just want to get them over and done with ASAP and all this waiting is just making me more frustrated.
So I just want to know how long it took for you guys to be sent your corrections list?
Thanks

The Viva From Hell!

Hi everyone

This is my first post on here and I am feeling really awful about how my viva went yesterday.
My viva lasted 7.5 hours! It would have gone on longer if my internal hadn't said his last train was at 18:20!
Needless to say after 4 hours I was completely mentally drained and really struggled to answer the questions being asked of me. I even burst out crying in front of my supervisor when the examiners stopped for lunch it was that bad.
The outcome was a conditional offer of the award of PhD subject to major corrections. But at my uni I only get 3 months to do these and being self-funded I've had to take a part time retail job so I can afford to live.
I'm really stressing at how much work I will have to do in the next 3 months and feeling like I just want to pack it all in and move on. I can't even celebrate "passing" the viva because I feel so down and deflated after the ordeal yesterday.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has faced something like this and any advice would be gravely appreciated.
