Dissertation Topic

Need advice regarding my proposed topic that was initially approved by my course advisor but was told by my assigned tutor that the topic I chose is general and ambitious.

Topic is titled: UK Housing Market - Analysis of the economics of the UK housing market and the causes and effects of the housing crisis.

I have done almost 30% of the work but not sure if I should proceed after receiving initial comments from my tutor. Any views on my concern or topic suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

T

Make it more specific?

Thanks for your reply Treeoflife. Would it be possible for you to elaborate on your suggestion? I was considering comparison of the housing trend between the UK and other European country.

Your tutor is saying it's too broad and they want you to narrow it down. I think your suggestion sounds more specific, but this isn't my area so it's hard to say. You should check it with your tutor.

Perhaps select a specific time (e.g. year or period) and elaborate on an aspect of the topic after a general introduction. Eg from your 30 percent done and your broad overview, can you identify from the various contributing factors, one factor that would benefit from further elaboration and/or a period of time that relates to this factor in general? Then once you have given your general overview (in the intro chapter), your lit review and research would be focused on this factor and its influence over the whole topic.

I agree with the others. From the work and reading you have done already, you will probably have a whole bunch of factors/questions that you thought your project would address. Instead, just choose one of these factors/questions and run it by your supervisor. Once he/she approves you can focus on that and do it really well. The work you have done so far will not have been wasted of course - as it is all background that will feed into your project.

Thank you for your comments. Will review my draft and consider your suggestions.
