I have never even bothered thinking about getting funding because I don't have a first in my undergrad.

However I have saved a lot and am willing to self fund. I have been working really hard on getting an original PhD proposal nailed down and will be targeting a potential supervisor at my current institution who has very similar research interests to me. I haven't yet sent him the first contact email, with CV/Proposal attached, because I want to read all his relevant publications first to make sure I am pressing the right buttons. I want to get it right first time.

I might send in the funding application anyway, can't do me any harm (although I won't be holding my breath).

I am applying for a PhD in English Literature in the UK.

I have a undergraduate MA English (Hons) 2:1 and am confident I will get a Merit for my MLitt.

How hard is it to get a place on a PhD programme in the Arts and Humanities in the UK for a self funded student?

I am semi-confident I can get someone in my current department to supervise my PhD.

I am currently studying a Master's part-time at an institution in Scotland and will graduate in August 2015.

I want to start a PhD in September 2015.

I am very clear on the direction I want to take with my research and I know exactly which two Academics I want to co-supervise my project. Both have research interests very similar to my own.

How do I get them both to be very interested in supervising my project?

I want them to agree to supervise it before I apply to do the PhD.
