Congratulations to the two Dr. K's. There has been so much good news around here lately, I hope some day I can share in these feelings of success and completion. :-)

PhD at 21
W

I also finished by undergrad by the time I turned 21 (May birthday). And I took a little under a year working as a R.A before starting my PhD, still at 21. I'm 2/3 through my first year and doing ok so far.

I had to attend some compulsory 1st year training and there were mainly social science people at it, and mostly all with 10 years age wise on me. It was a bit daunting, but at the same time, also gave me a bit of a boost, being able to be there at a younger age and (hopefully) able to stand up academically. Everyone has different backgrounds, but no one in particular is going to give you a better start at your PhD.

So don't worry too much, and remember you had to earn your right to be here in the first place, so obviously that's a good start!

Just want to say well done to all who have recently submitted, (and to those in other threads too). And to tokyorabbit and ruby good luck, you'll get there too, and then you can wait for the rest of us to join you (hopefully, in a couple of years time!) :-)

Problem and solution search or professional recognition?

Well I first thought of a PhD during my undergrad, but it was only after I started honours year that I really thought more about it, and especially after my honours project. So I took a year out working as a research assistant in a similar-but-not-really field and then looked for and found my perfect project. I feel so lucky to have found it (8 months in so far, that could change...). In my field (microbiology) this seems to be a normal progression.

I should not be having so much fun with this..... I wish I wore tiara's as a normal hair accessory......

Slightly urgent...

Hey,

I was involved in a foodsafety project that used a recruitment agency. They spoke to members of the public in shopping centres to recruit. The incentives were 60 quid vouchers for Marks or Tescos. But the project did involve them putting in 4 hours in a mock up kitchen cooking food and being scored on their hygiene, and under the watchful eye of some web cams!

I also would echo what was mentioned below about testing out your recruitment in a pilot study. Good advice.

Morning everyone,

Well I finished off yesterady kinda badly, I went bread crazy..... following my lasagne, I had two pieces of toast (granary bread) two pieces of wheaten bread and two pancakes. Two cups of tea (one green one normal) and 2 yogurts and some grapes.
can you tell I hadn't had bread for a few days.....

on teh other hand I did do an hour of yoga although it wasn't very aerobic (like the ashtanga I normally do), but I'll take whatever course the uni has on!

And echo's on the honey front, my Dad swears by it! So I wouldn't worry too much about that.

P.S a mini trampoline sounds like so much fun, my nephews have a big one in their garden and it never stops being fun! and it puffs me out no end!

advice re finding phd and applying
W

Hey hey I agree with smoobles, I found my project in November, applied in December, interviewed in Febrary and started in April, so don't worry about this years starters, just keep looking and get yourself out there, good luck :-)

Wookie too knows that feeling following the fire alarm going off in her flat 4 times yesterday. She thinks her ears are bleeding inside because of it.

hey, thanks lara and scienceishard,

I have started off ok-ish today, I had some cereal (wholewheat is good according to the adverts), however I did put a wee touch of sugar on top, oops :$. Also have had one cup of tea and some fruit juice, I know I'm having last nights left over homemade lasagne for lunch (and I put less cheese in than I used too), and I have yoga tonight. So far a good day!

lol at Juno, I think if I hung my favourite slightly too tight outfit in the kitchen I'd only get depressed and comfort eat to get rid of the pain!!!!!
