How long did your PhD take/ planning to take?

S

I just wanted to get an idea how long people who have finished took to complete a PhD or how long people a year or two in think they will take to finish? I am about to mine next week and would like to be done in three years but have been hearing it can take much longer! Thanksx

Think of a number, then double it. That's how long it will take.

3 years full time... one year working full time and writing / editing thesis.. and 6 months between submitting, viva and corrections... so just over 4.5 years in total...

If you have funding for 3 years, you should take 3 years.

I have 3 + 1 funding and expect to take exactly that, *maybe* half a year more with the viva and corrections but I can't afford to not be funded which is quite a motivator. I have 18 months to write up after I get back from fieldwork so don't think it is unfeasible. I would be so happy to finish on time and not let it drag on and on...

This question cannot be answered. In general terms, not less than 3 years. Most people actually manage to get a PhD within the 5-year band, 4.2 years on average. Yes, it sucks.
