Presenting findings of a study at a conference that you plan to publish as a Journal paper?

H

Hi,

I have written up results of a study that I hope to write up as a journal paper in the next few months.

Meanwhile a conference has come up, where I can present my work and need to submit an abstract before hand. Would it be OK to submit abstract to that conference and write a journal paper later on, on the same study?

Yes, it is ok and common to do.

Even if the conference publishes the proceeding, it is still ok. You have then to pay attention, however, to not commit plagiarism between the proceedings text and the article.

Proceedings are usually more like an extended abstract, thus they don't count as full publication. You have to be careful to not reuse the same words in the article (alias: write anew), and declare in the acknowledgements that part of the material has been previously published in the Conf XY proceedings.

Yes, conferences are excellent ways to have a run through of your data before publishing.
