I am nearing the conclusion of a Masters in Law (LLM) and I am looking in to the possiblity of taking up a Phd.

My undergraduate degree mark is very poor, however it may be possible for me to get a good mark for my masters, will this make any difference? Or will universities look at my complete academic record?

Any advice anyone is able to give will be really appreciated.
Thanks

Considering an LLM

Average of 2 essays each semester (between 2000 and 4000 words) plus an exam. The dissertation is 20 - 25,000 words. Classes finish in June, our dissertation is due end of September.

There are several people in my class that travel from over 150 miles away for the one day of classes. Most research can now be done over the internet (Westlaw/LexisNexis), so these people do not miss out. I live 5 minutes from my university but still do all my research over the internet.

As for work, I work in a busy bar - in a managerial position so I am there most evenings. I still have plenty of time to myself.

hope this helps, any other questions just ask

Considering an LLM

Hi,
Im about half way through an LLM at the moment. I am studying the course full-time and the timetable for both semesters has been only 6 hours a week (this has been divided into 3 different classes).
Depending on what units you take will depend on how much time outside of class you can spend on preparing for the next weeks class. For example, for IP law we will have several cases to read up on, where in criminal law we will have several journal articles to read/analyse. I would say that on average, about 15 hours would be sufficient - but again, it would depend on what your tutor sets.
Alot of people have dropped out because they were not expecting the work load to be so intense. But to be honest, from what I have heard about my universities reforms to the LLM next year, we have it easy.

I gained entrance to the course through study of law at college level, and the study of media law in my undergraduate journalism degree. I impressed through my application, and this leaded to me gaining entrance to the course. I am the only non-law graduate in the class, however I have been told that there have been many before me.
Thanks for the advice,

'You can't possibly do an LLM degree without having done an LLB beforehand. The masters degree you are likely to be doing is probably a specialist masters for non-law graduates, which means it has a specific focus on one area of the law. What area is it?'

The LLM that I am currently studying is not a specialist masters. We have the option of gaining the masters in Intellectual Property specialist status if we so wish, but this would involve taking each unit that is related to I.P Law (including the dissertation).
The units I have chosen to take, as well as those chosen by my classmates - who all hold LLB's are Advanced Issues of Criminal Liability, Trademark Law and Legal Research. When I go back after xmas we will study Discrimination and Human Rights.
I dont have an LLB, but the masters I am studying is the same conventional standard as that taught across the university network in the UK.

chose to study law at masters level as it interests me. However I am unsure of what career to pursue following this. My classmates all intend to become solicitors and take the LPC. This wont be possible for me unfortunately as I cant afford it.
I am interested in teaching law, possibly at college level. I will need to take the certficate in teaching further education, but does anyone know how often law teaching jobs come available? Ive looked through job vacancy sites but there do not appear to be that many. I would like a job that involves law, but unsure of what career that may be?
