Phone Interview!!
H

The way employers set up interviews are just the same as they do with face to face ones. Managers and recruiters are hired to make phone interviews to screen candidates from a pool of applicants for employment.

Spending time on reviewing all regular questions raised during the phone interview is of great importance and then be well prepared for your answers. Beside, set up the plan for a phone talk saying about your background and skills.

PhD interview tomorrow, help!
H

Quote From squigglies:

I have a PhD interview tomorrow (biochemical-related) and due to my being utterly useless, I've done very little preparation!

I have the rest of the evening and tomorrow morning to learn enough to make it sounds like I know what I'm doing. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice? Or is it basicaly a lost cause?

:(

I guess you get hold of the latest publications of your potential supervisors. Read them, form an opinion of them and be ready to critique and discuss them. But be willing to say there were things you didn't understand or quite get in the papers especially if they are quite technical or in an area you are not familiar with - just demonstrate that you have read them and are interested in them. They'll be looking for enthusiasm, genuine interest and potential as much as for your current level of knowledge and understanding. Also, in discussing any piece of research, remember its important to be critical, understand its limitations and alternative ways of looking at things.

Quote From rinawm:

Soo... if you get asked at an interview for a PhD whether you have applied for other PhDs aside from the one you are being interviewed for what's the best answer?

I was honest and said I had applied for others. Should I have lied? Would you think this would be used against me?

Any feedback is welcome. Now just nervously waiting to hear back from this...

Last week, I was asked if I appied to another company and what I think if they didn't pay as at other. I answer honestly. I think I don't have best answers. :-(

[Non-academic] cover letter-How long?
H

======= Date Modified 23 Aug 2011 04:48:01 =======

Quote From ady:

How long is too long, how short is too short? :-(

Just wondering if anybody has any advice on the optimum length for a cover letter. I was told by a professor that an academic cover letter should be between 1-2 pages long. All advice I can find on other types of cover letters state that they should be no more than one page. I am just about to apply for a non academic job but in a third level institution so am confused how long the cover letter should be. Any advice greatly received.

In general, you shouldn’t let your cover letter exceed one page.

Keeping your cover letter short serves several purposes.

First, it shows that you know how to organize your thoughts in a clear and logical manner.

Second, it shows that you know how to present your ideas concisely.

Finally, it indicates that you respect the hiring manager’s time and understand that she has a lot of cover letters and resumes to read.
