Hey RubyW and Lara,
Hope all is well. Thank yo so much for your response to my earlier post- sorry i have been away for so long...the teaching has swallowed all my time. Rubyw- I hope you the chapter corrections are going well...I am quite amazed at the motivation that you and Lara have !!! - I feel so out of league... sigh!!!
Things got pretty bad so I also tried counselling but that does not seem to help much ....
Well..if only i could get the analysis complete(am almost there) and start the chapters i might feel better but right now im jogging on the same spot!!
How did you all know how much time to devote for each chapter ,how did you work that out..dont know if its just me but my biggest mental block is not knowing how much time its going to take to be able to set deadlines to work towards them...any advice is really appreciated..
have a good weekend and hope you get some rest
Have have just being going through the posts..its great to see how everyone has progressed ...well done...
Rubyw- hope the corrections are going well ...well youre almost there
tokyorabbit- congratulations on the engagement ..
Lara - so good to know that you are almost done...its nearly time to celebrate!!! the idea of a viva prep diary is fantastic..
As for me i have been too ashamed to log on to this forum..its going terrible...i have had a quite few weeks and went into hibernation ...just realized how strenuous teaching can be ..how do you all cope along with working on the side?. how do you ever manage the discipline ? any advice is apprciated ..
i am still in the analysis phase and i think this can go on for ever but trying to set end of jan as a deadline and have to start with the chapter by Feb...
well back to the analysis now...
i thought i would pop in to say a quick hello..i have been reading the posts and am amazed at how much you all have progressed over the last 2 months...rousing cheers for all!!!!
As for me the last few months have been hellish with 8-10 hours of teaching a week....PhD has been on the back burner but am getting back to it now ..plodding on with the analysis ...and goshhh... i have really missed being on this forum ...
look forward to catching up soon!!!
Hey Bonzo and everyone,
how are you doing ? i was away on fieldwork and am just back...it was quite a disaster as I ended up with food poisoning but am back in the UK now...
Bonzo how has the new term kicked off??? thanks for letting us know about the book , will look out for it ..
Im backkkkkkk....I have been reading a few posts and its great that everyone is still working hard and plodding on!! that is fantastic..well done!!
As for me my field trip was quite a disaster and to top it off i got food poisoning, missed my flight and had to extend my stay by 15 days. Well...im back on my feet now and back to Uk ..
I look forward to joining the discussions again ....
take care everyone and its good to be back !!!! :-)
To start off a little bit on my background.. My PhD in the area of Management Information Systems ( a grey area between computer science and management) . The topic of my PhD is ‘innovation in the hacker community’.
I am investigating the process of innovation in the virtual community of hackers ( you are probably wondering why hackers!!! I worked for three years in cyber crime before this hence the interest :-)
I have almost completed my fieldwork except for a few interviews over the next three weeks after which I intend to spend 2 months on analysis and then start writing my chapters..(or is it meant to be alongside? Not sure)
but here is the problem ..but the end of next month my supervisor asked me to give him the details of the chapters I am going to write and the timelines for each of them ..
I am a little perplexed as I have no idea on what my core chapters are going to be although I have broadly categorized them as Introduction, Literature review , methodology , 3 core chapters and conclusion …
I would appreciate any inputs from people who have structured and designed their chapters with deadlines for each? What was your approach, did you decide on the subsections of each chapter after your analysis or alongside? and how did you decide on the time for each of them..
Any help is much appreciated
Thanks very much in advance
Hey Lara, Armendaf, RubyW , Tractorgirl and Everyone,
Thank so much for al your encouragement on my previous post.. that cheered me up so much …if I ever get to meet you all you will get a big hug form me (virtual hug for now)
I am so touched you all took the time to offer advice and sympathy…
Armendaf when I read what you said I feel like it is exactly my story …Lara thank you so much for the link
Rubyw thank you for your input, we are in very related fields (I am in social sciences- Management Information Systems) ..
Armendaf grt idea. I will start a new thread and post more about my research area and types of chapters I have planed, all your suggestions would be priceless and also it might help others structure their chapters as well…
It is great to see all of you all working so hard on your PhDs ever over the weekends.. hats off for all the effort , I am more than certain your theses would be worth all the hard work..
As for me.. it was such a lovely day, I couldn’t resist going out ..well had to anyway, I am leaving for more fieldwork to India in two days , (a few more interviews over the next three weeks) so had things to buy and get organized …
Thanks to everyone I feel uplifted to work on my report gain and intend to do so the first thing tomorrow….
Wish you all a productive day tomorrow
Juno, I completely agree with you although Bonzo and Lara's view is the one to take ...I am back again with my insomnia..slept at 5 this morning ...i am tired but lie in bed wide awake ..sometimes with heart pounding ...
...so today i am absolutely knackered ....
hahaha bonzo its true the person who came up with the saying must be dippy!!
well i'm off to the gym hoping that will put me to sleep ...
how is everyone else doing ???
very glad to know everyone is making such good progress. Also the idea of frequent updates is excellent ..good thinking !!!
I am still not done with the report as was given two MBA theses for correction ..but cannot afford to give up although I think my supervisor certainly has ....he actually told me that I do not stick to my plans :-( ...i felt very unprofessional not to mention embarrassed... i also think he odes not trust me anymore )
how do you all manage when this arise all of a sudden ??? it seems to throw me completely off balance ( would appreciate any advice)
lara- I was just reading your posts on the way you are dealing with each chapter and found it very informative, however as I am only just going to begin my writing up in a month i was wondering if i could ask you how you developed your structure for each chapter ..if this is inappropriate for this thread my apologies ....
keep up the hard work everyone!! (up)
Hey Bonzo, you are so right, this fourm has been grt, i have been contributing ot the accountability thread and really enjoy the feeling of connecting with people in the same position as i am ..
also good you took time off...I did so too ..recently went to Sicily ..was a grt break...

but well done on being so well organized and being able to stick to it ..my phd is in short bursts
hope it will get better soon...hope your phd is going well
sorry i have been off the radar all of a sudden... i have been running around like a headless chicken...sudden administrative work and some extra papers to correct...have not managed to meet my deadline and have got an extra day ( quite shameful really !!!) :$.... still don't think that i have the focus ...sighhhhhh
Lara - don't worry about it too much, i admire the way you work when you do ..consistent for days , so don't worry about the dips , hope your summarizing and reading is going ok

Hey Lara, TG and Armendaf,
Good to hear from everyone, i didn't want to write earlier as i was so guilty....i have just done absolutely nothing this weekend (except for fun with friends and the gym) , its terrible but knowing that we are all in the same boat makes me feel like i'm not the only one...
I hope to get up early tomorrow (for once) and have a productive day
