i'm confused between independent t-test, mann-whitney and chi square test to use in my study.

I am a bit confused by your description.... Did any of these people receive an intervention, or is this simply one group where some did well and some did not?

You need to be a very careful with what you are planning to do.... It sounds like a fishing trip to me. What is your hypothesis? Did you have a pre-defined statistical plan?

no intervention done. i'm doing retrospective study in one hospital for people who had tuberculosis and undergone treatment and who already had a final treatment outcome. i clustered/grouped the patients based on their outcome (poor/good). i want to know if the patients characteristics (variables listed on my original post) can influence treatment outcome. that's why i'm asking what statistical treatment is better to determine if there are any significant difference between the dependent and independent variables.

Hi plethoraldork,

If I understood well you have two different groups of participants (not-paired) tested in different conditions.
If I understood well, you have only one outcome that is a binary variable (either passed or failed?)

Mann-Whitney and independent t-test can be used when your outcome is a continuous variable (so no use for you).

Because you have a binary outcome (yes or no), then you need to do a Pearson' chi-square test (or Likelihood Ratio) to test if the difference between the two groups is significant.

So, say that you determined that the difference between the two groups is significant, then you want to see which predictors are significant. First of all, you need to know if your participants are independent. Assuming they are independent observations, you will need to do logistic regression, so you can include both categorical and continuous variables. So you will be able to determine to what extend substance use affects your outcome after controlling for place of residence for example.

It is very common in social sciences and epidemiology to have dependent participants. You can estimate the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to see if they are dependent. Even a small dependence will affect your results. For example, participants living in the same neighborhood might be more similar than participants living in different neighborhoods. In order to take into account the hierarchy of the data, you will need to perform multilevel logistic regression (binary outcome: yes/no). Multilevel modelling allows to take into account contextual effects (effect of neighborhood), and also individual effects (age), as well as the interaction between these factors. Multilevel logistic regression is very similar to traditional logistic regression. There are special-purpose software to deal with dependent data.

Another way you can analyse your data, is to pair them but I am not going to confuse you with that, unless you organised the experiment like that?

Hope it helps, let me know if you have more questions.

thank you very much!

hello everyone, i need your help regarding these statistical tests since i'm not really big on stats. i want to know if there are any significant difference between the two groups in my study. i'm confused which statistical treatment i will be using.
here's a little background on my study. i grouped the respondents in my study into two groups. respondents with successful outcome and respondents with unsuccessful outcome. i have several independent variables in my study which include: age, gender, place of residence, marital status, income, employment status, substance use and co-morbidities. i want to know if there are significant difference between respondents with successful outcome and respondents with unsuccessful outcome with regards to the variables listed or if any of the variables can affect the outcome of the respodents.
age and income are the only continuous variables in my study while the rest are categorical variables.

which among these statistical treatment is better to analyze my data?

How to compare and interpret output in cluster analysis?
P

Good Day! I'm currently making my thesis and I'm already on the chapter of analyzing my research findings. I'm using cluster analysis specifically two-step cluster in analyzing my data. I already have the output, and was able to form three clusters. My problem for now is how do I compare and interpret the grouped data or at least identifying/determining labels of each cluster? I'm using SPSS 22 by the way.

how to use cluster analysis?
P

so in using cluster analysis, one could not predict the outcome base on groups/cluster? my research problem is to determine the similarities and characteristics of MDRTB patients in terms of treatment outcomes. i wonder how can i utilize cluster analysis to answer this problem.

how to use cluster analysis?
P

im conducting a study on the characteristics of tb patients in terms of their treatment outcome (successful and unsuccessful). my independent variable/data sets include sociodemographic/economic factors(age, gender, income, civil status etc) of tb patients. is it possible to use cluster analysis out of this? can cluster analysis perform the similarities of patients who have successful outcome and patients with unsuccessful outcome base on the dependent variables? i'm confused between cluster analysis and discriminant analysis. please help. thanks

Can someone help me understand path diagram and path analysis?
P

and since i want to know the indirect effects of my dependent variable, can some of my independent variables be considered as endogenous variable?

Can someone help me understand path diagram and path analysis?
P

I'm currently conducting a study on the factors affecting treatment outcomes of MDR-TB patients. My independent variables include: gender, place of residence, age, civil status, income, occupation, substance abuse and co-morbidities while treatment outcome is my dependent variable. One way to analyze my data is through the use of multiple regression path analysis. In regards to path analysis, how can I identify the exogenous and endogenous variables under my study? Do i need to conduct the study and tabulate the results before I can identify these exogenous and endogenous variables? And is it possible to create a path diagram before the study has been conducted? If you could provide me a good read on path analysis i would appreciate it. Thanks

Help me modify/construct my research title

thank you for all your answers. i appreciate it

Help me modify/construct my research title
P

would it be ok if i'll just focus on the factors in regards to my title however i would still look and include in my study its indirect effects and the patients classification?
something like "Factors Affecting Treatment Outcomes in Patients with Multi-drug Resistent Tuberculosis."
i was thinking it would be a total mess if I include everything in my title. any thoughts?

Help me modify/construct my research title
P

I am conducting a research study to determine the factors that affect the treatment outcomes among patients treated for multi drug-resistant tuberculosis and at the same time I want to identify the indirect effects of these factors. In addition, I would also like to categorize/classify the patients as successful and unsuccessful with regards to their treatment outcomes.
I am utilizing multiple regression to determine the factors, path analysis to identify the indirect effects of the factors involved and discriminant analysis to categorize the patients. The factors that I considered include: demographic factors, socioeconomic factors, patient related factors and co-morbidities.
I am having a hard time constructing my research title since I have a couple of dependent variables involved in my study. If you can help me construct my research title or give any advice, I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

How to ensure validity and reliability in research?
P

I'm currently conducting a research specifically a retrospective study. However I'm not using questionnaire or interview as my instrument to gather data. But I gather data through charts review of the patients. How will I measure or ensure the validity and reliability of my research?
