Reviews - do they count?
S

Thanks Keenbean! Good luck with your viva, fingers crossed!

I'm in the humanities, but I guess it's more or less the same as for you. Even though we don't have an official impact factor list of journals, it is still quite clear what the good and the not so good journals are in one's field. I think I'd better start thinking about what I want to review (my sup gave me a two page list and told me to pick a couple...).

Thanks again! :-)

Reviews - do they count?
S

I know that if one wants an academic career then publishing is really important. According to my supervisor in the first year or two of my PhD I should maybe try and send in a couple of reviews to journals, and try and publish one or two articles at the beginning of the third year (possibly end of the second year).

My question is: how much do reviews count when you apply for post-docs, fellowships etc?

TIA!

What I really don't get is, why the postgradforum needs its users to tweet or facebook share threads/posts. It's an anonymous forum...

(Btw, I'm really not against twitter and facebook, but I'm against having it shoved into my face where it's really not needed. Anyone any thoughts on this?)

Hi guys,

I've checked this on my macbook in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari and I am not seeing anything unusual. Is it something that is looking like it shouldn't or is it that you just dont' like the fact that it is not moving with the page?

I still have it... It says: 'Add This Page To Your Social Networking Sites' and then there are icons for Facebook, Twitter and Google+ (I think). I can only see it when I'm inside a thread. All my software is up-to-date (even have Lion on my mac), so not sure. I can send you a screenshot if you want to.

Still appearing for me too, on my Macs in Firefox. Very annoying and distracting. And on my 800x600 desktop it takes up quite a lot of screen acreage.

Glad it's not just me. I'm using Opera, but tried in Firefox and it shows up there as well.

Perhaps it's just me but the 'Add this page to your social networking sites:' comment seems stuck at the bottom of my screen and is in the way of text!

Is it just me?

Same problem. Bloody annoying...

I got a Mac just before I started my MA, before that I had a PC. There is no way I will ever go back to a PC. All the programmes I need run on my Mac as well and it's just so much more user friendly than a PC.

Sorry but it just isn't true!!!

Sorry, Delta, I don't find you compassionate. This means caring for others and for general social justice. I just find you rather self-absorbed, albeit necessarily so. If you don't care, how lucky is it that you got a salary? I wish you all the best.

I'm not quite sure how you can deduce that Delta is not compassionate. What he is basically saying is that he treated his PhD as a 9-5 job that will open doors for him. What's wrong with that?
