Hi,

In January 2007, I will begin my PhD in UK. Now I am searching for accommodation in Manchester. I am checking some internet sites for flat sharing such as www.flatshare.com , www.clickflatshare.com. Firstly, I would ask are there any other sites for finding shared flats especially offered for PhD students?

And there are some points that I cant understand on this site.

I guess for the rent “pw” means per week, and “pcm” means per month? what is letter c in “pcw”?

While sharing a flat, is there a official procedure(such as signing some documents and giving them to an official bureau)? or is it all informal? As an international student, what I have to pay attention most in this documents?

Instalments for university fees are possible by direct debit. Has anyone paid his/her fees by direct debit? Is it too complicated bureaucratic process for a non UK/EU national? Or Is it just enough to have a bank account in UK?

I have recently been offered place for PhD. But it will not be possible
to meet September 2006 deadline for registration. Therefore I
defered my registration to January 2007. Now, Do I have to wait until January 2007 for registration? Or If I want to register, Can I register in October 2006 and begin study in January 2007?

Actually, I have been offered a place for PhD, but I havent received the official acceptance paper yet. I dont think I will able to manage to register in September 2006(visa, paperwork etc.). So, Will they not allow me to register in October 2006 for instance?

Hi,
Do PhD (research) students have to register at the beginning of acedemic years? They dont have to take classes, so cant they register at the middle of a semester?

Hi,

I have heard that it is possible to be a Professor in the USA without a PhD, particularly in the practical fields. Is it also like that in UK?

Hi,

I had applied to five universities in UK for PhD research. Two of them rejected my application but three of them offered a place to me. The two universities rejected due to the lack of an appropriate supervisor. Is that just a gentle way turning down a student? Because the other three universities do not have perfectly appropriate supervisor either.

My topic interdiscipliniary, so I also have many questions in my mind regarding the supervision process. Would it be awkward if I suggest a telephone call to my supervisor? (I havent talked to her yet, contact only by emails). So I can talk about the deferring as well as the other points...

Hi,

I am offered PhD place (as the continuous readers of the forum know :-) ) Now i am planning to deter registration, so I can have 6 more months for searching scholarships. Is postponing registration acceptable in UK?

Hi,

What does "clereance" mean at a university? Is it a second round of applications for empty posts?

Thanks...
