What happens once you accept a studentship? (and how long should things take?)

M

Hi,

I sent off an acceptance form and a bank details thing over a week ago to accept an offer for a PhD studentship...and I've still not heard anything back, not even a "Cheers, we received your thing". I may be worrying about nothing but it is causing me stress because it's only a couple of weeks until my start date and I'm trying to find a flat to rent - all while not having heard a thing!

What do you think?

You need to contact them asap. The best way to do it is call them.

This.

I can identify myself with you. It happened to me but luckily I got the offer much early (May for the September intake). I just kept calm, I just had a feeling that writing or calling them would annoy them and lead them to revoke my studentship which I had struggled to get for 2 years.

But there's no harm making an inquiry. If it's in UK, they're probably busy with UCAS admission, but they'll eventually respond

They didn't realise for about 5 months that I hadn't formally accepted their offer, so I wouldn't worry! Contact them if you like.

Thanks people

I did send an email to the general office (main contacts are both on leave), although I've realised that it's bank holiday so definitely won't get a reply until at least Tuesday...
I do hope everything is fine!

This probably has nothing to do with your supervisor, but with the administrative staff in the department. August is like the "official academia holiday month", our department is almost empty, so it wouldn't be surprising if everyone is on holidays.

Also chase it up, you won't "offend" them. In my case, I accepted the offer, my sponsor send the contract to the school, and the school secretary somehow managed to lose it. So, I had to ask the company to sign a new contract (that stressed me out of my head), and after I managed to sort it out, the first "lost" contract re-appeared... Well...
