Like the other responders I also meant to say, perhaps you just need to take some time out. There's nothing wrong with that. We all have to fit a PhD amongst all the other things we have to do. Just contact your supervisor, I am sure they will be helpful xx
Sorry to hear that cornflower. Unfortunately I know of a few people who this has happened to. I would definately speak to your supervisor as if there are any negative affects from this, at least you have given them the heads up and your supervisors can protect you. Perhaps a way of ensuring that your work doesnt suffer as much is to concentrate on smaller parts of the PhD i.e if you are doing the literature review, read one aspect of your subject or perhaps concentrate on the parts you like. You will most prob feel a lot more confident to tackle other, more harder aspects of the project. Perhaps as well you could go back and look at why you are studying this particular subject? is there anything else you can develop in the research question? i.e respondents, sub areas and scope of the research. Hope it has helped in some small way to talk about it on here. You take care Teresa x
Hi, Just a few thoughts I had re your question. I am only a first year so might not be getting this right. I would discuss this with my supervisor and then hopefully he/she/they would ensure that they attend any meetings you have with this other student. Have you written any papers on this? If so I'm sure it would be a lot easier to ensure that she has to reference you. If you haven't written any papers perhaps I would do so now.
Does anyone have access to the following? The Part-Time Student's Experience 1996–2007: An issue of identity and marginalisation? James Williamsa, David Kane. Tertiary Education and Management, Volume 16, Issue 3 September 2010 , pages 183 - 209
Thank you,

Hi, I've just started too. I am with Bangor, North Wales, School of Social Science and I am researching graduate employment using Pierre Bourdieu I always find when I read other peoples progress that it sounds far advanced than my own!
So far I have concentrated on the reading as this is a new area for me. I can tell my understanding has developed over the last few months, but I haven't managed to read Bourdieu from start to finish yet. Out of the reading has come some writing - key definitions 'paper', writing up some of the interesting research I have come across and a presentation for a local post grad conference. I am also considering presenting at another conference, I am just waiting for feedback from my supervisors. I am also attempting to write a paper on a critique of one of the key terms in my subject area. I recently set up a group on FB (You've graduated, now what? Research Project on North Wales graduates) to promote my project as the research will have a longitudinal aspect to it.
I have very supportive supervisors, but the direction of the work has come from me, they tend to add suggestions, but I seem to dictate how it goes. This works well for me as I have worked as a researcher on a number of projects so don't need hand holding. On the other hand its not always so good as my research has been for local authorities, and there is a world of difference for writing for councils and writing your PhD. Sometime i don't know if I am doing well, whilst other times I think universities move very slow. Luckily for me I have a close friend who is a year ahead of me and I am using her progress to chart my own as we have very similar experience and approach.
It would be handy if us newbies kept id touch with each other as then we can maybe help chart each others progress, and be a suource of support. I know that i tend to have day where things go very well, and other days were I feel like a complete numpty - it would be nice to know I am not alone. I am on twitter tia1972oxo and on facebook (Teresa Crew) if anyone wants to This forum has been great for me so far tho!
Hi Ady, apologies I didn't reply, for some reason I'm not getting notifications when people reply. Yes it went well in terms of I got a v good response, but I was sooo nervous, and know I could have done a lot better. However, at least I've got the first one out of the way! Lol, at the start of the presentation I wished I had put it off and off lol. It couldn't have been that bad tho as I am considering doing another one! I'm going to pick my supervisors' brains re as well this time re the content. Just realised you are the same helpful person who is sending the article - thank you! i hope o return the favours one day. Teresa x
Hi AMC, my computer is having an off day as I thought I had already replied to your msg - apologies if you get two replies to this. Yes, I agree, Welsh language skill are needed in Wales, but especially in North West Wales (Gwynedd and IO Anglesey), Whereas it most probably a different story in North east Wales. There is already research by Baker (2009 I think), for example that highlights these diffs. I am currently at the lit review stage but am already thinking ahead to data collection. I expect to do this via semi structured interviews in person or via email. If you would like to know more about the research feel free to pm me, or take look on my FB group that has an overview of the project. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Youve-graduated-now-what-Research-Project-on-North-Wales-graduates/170854742941486. What stage are you at in your PhD? Regards Teresa
A copy of the abstract from a recent conference presentation I gave on the research is available from http://bangor.academia.edu/TeresaCrew/Talks#d32973. Thanks Teresa

Hi all,
I don't know if this is the correct forum to promote my PhD, please feel free to let me know if it is not. I am in the first year of my PhD, the subject is graduate employability and higher education. I am interested in finding out what happens to people in North Wales once they graduate from university and FE colleges: how well do they do in the graduate labour market or in gaining post grad scholarships. I have set up a Facebook group "You've graduated, now what? Research Project on North Wales graduates" If you would like to follow my project, or even take part in the research, please feel free to join the group, or email me for further details [email protected]. Thanks Teresa
