Resubmission deadline around the corner. Tips please!
4

Thanks for the advice Rick. It would be a bit hard for them to find specific areas of the changes, as the thesis changed a lot structurally and some bits were re-written completely. I'm guessing they'd have to re-read. Their report included some strong comments  but also some vague ones which could be open to interpretation. Therefore I am not so sure if I'm meeting all of this examiner's expectations. I guess I could write a document explaining the changes addressed in the same style they asked? Would that be acceptable do you think?

Pineapple29, thank you and good luck with your work too. I hope your changes are more straight-forward.

Resubmission deadline around the corner. Tips please!
4

To cut the long story short.... My deadline for resubmission after viva is only 10 days away. I wasn't asked to attend another viva, but my corrections are not so straight-forward (they are structural as well as theoretical). This was only the external's decision apparently, but all examiners will need to re-read the new version of the thesis and assess again. I am employed full time, so I didn't have enough time to properly focus on these changes apart from evenings and weekends, so I am not so happy with the result to be honest. And I'm still re-writing sections this close to the deadline. Although I was given major corrections without need for another viva, I understand that I might still fail after this resubmission, and my university only gives 1 chance to resubmit. My questions are:

1) Do you have any tips for speeding up work or making corrections?
2) Do you know if it is possible to submit the thesis somewhere else if I don't please the examiner with my changes?

Thank you in advance...

Urgent: Endnote X

ok, I don't need this anymore as I've located some of the missing references one-by-one. But I'll leave the thread question in case somebody knows the answer and it might come handy to others.

Urgent: Endnote X

Is it possible to display references by their dates added to the library in Endnote X?

Well the story is, I've just realised that I ended up with 2 almost-identical libraries, each having some extra references that I can't manually pick due to having too many references. How I did this is, after saving one to another location as back up, I accidentally saved more references on both of those libraries throughout the last few months. So as a result I now have 2 incomplete libraries with extra references on each of them. I tried merging these two by 'import/remove duplicates' methods in order to achieve one accurate library, but it gave me an error due to PDF links being wrong. So I thought if I can view the references by their date of being added to library, I thought I could at least identify and manually achieve this, as it has only been a few months since this problem started. Any ideas?

Thanks...

Do you know any 'Free' waste collection / recycling services in London?

Thank you, I am checking Wandsworth now. I don't live in that council, but they seem to have addresses on their website.

Thank you Sneaks. Would they take all type of metal? I'll give it a go then. I tried freecyle & gumtree for the scrap wood (all the good stuff already taken by freecycle users).

Bit off-topic but I thought someone working in environmental subjects might have a better idea than Google: I need to clear out my flat back to its 'unfurnished' state in order to get my deposit back, and I managed to give away a lot of good stuff to Freecycle already. However I ended up with lots of large furniture pieces, mainly wood, some metal and bits and bobs. Our council started to charge for this type of collections and it works out very very expensive to arrange it. Do you know who could make use of this type of household waste? Any ideas apart from a google search? Many thanks...

Congratulations keenbean. Well done indeed.

Applications and Interviews

Interviews are for both sides to get to know each other. By acting like this they lost the chance to work with you, obviously an academic who knows how to turn bad into good and is more than capable of working hard to achieve good results. Sorry to hear about your experience. But who wants to work with narrow-minded self-opinionated academics that only want to boost their ego anyway. There will be something better in a department that you'll feel at home. Good luck.

Advice, please

Awwww, c'mon now. I'm asking a serious question and am creasing up! I just HATE footnote refs.

Me too. I find it hard too. Especially when author-notes are mixed with references altogether as footnotes. So confusing.

How wonderful. Congratulations. Good luck with the next step in your life (up)

And the funny thing is most of those sites get advertised on the advertisement column of this site, on the right hand side. I am guessing those columns get their advertising from recent google searches (i.e I searched recently flats to rent, furniture to buy, and also references to help me with my thesis corrections with typical keywords; and in random order suggestions for these products appear inside that column). But surely there should be some way for the moderators to control these ads.

Is there anyway you can change its direction so it becomes something more interesting for you? I changed my PhD completely apart from its subject area after the 2nd year. I even managed to find an external to support the new elements. My supervisors agreed as it is natural for change to happen in a research project. Good luck!
