PhD's can be scary but when things work out, they are very rewarding. The best people to talk to about living with PhD studies is to talk to the postgraduate students (so it's good you're posting on this site :-) When you visit potential supervisors make sure you talk to their students. They'll give you the inside story of what the supervisor, university and city is really like. I've found my PhD to have a lots of ups and downs, but it's always been interesting!

I'm not currently in the country, I'm in China so at the moment I'm seven hours ahead of Britain (it'll be eight hours after this weekend). When I post a message it puts down the British time, not my local time :-)

I know this has probably been asked before but I'm interested in hearing the answers.

I decided to do one to give me a hand up the career ladder i.e. avoid being stuck in a rut. The only problem is I still don't know wich career to choose! I always thought by the time I graduated from my undergraduate studies I'd know :-)

Why oh why didn't I register with the name Andy? Now I'm lumbered with the name pcxag1. Wasn't awake when I signed on to this and put in my Nottingham Uni ID. Really need to start drinking stronger coffee like 'Rocket Fuel'...

Lot's of wine is a very good idea :-) Just wish my stipend allowed my to have an extensive wine cellar not just the cheap wine from Sainsbury's....

I'm interested to hear about this vegan cheese cake? Can I ask, what made you decide to be a vegan?

Reminds me of a friend of mine back as an undergrad. He started living with four girls and one evening I popped round to see him to find him sat in his room drinking red wine with a large bar of Dairy Milk and watching Love Actually. At this point I decided to drag him down the pub. (Although I have nothing against chocolate - it's benn a great comfort in a PhD crisis)
