It's so much easier to be as close to the uni as possible. You choose, based on your preference, whether you would rather live alone or with house mates. Where ever you live has the chance of noisy/messy house mates. Avoid undergrads and pick other people that say they are quiet and tidy.

Might be best to take the fully funded one. Part time PhDs can be very stressful.

Remember a PhD is supposed to be your own work, so it's not unusual for your supervisor to ask you to design your own project. If you are struggling to do this, ask them for more advice, or whether there is someone else you can ask for assistance.

Just to let you know, most people on here are from the UK.

I think academia is like this, especially science. Every result takes so long to get there that when it actually arrives it's like... meh.

There needs to be something that blocks spammers from signing up, like a better captcha. It can't just be reactive moderation

Well you don't really need to cite your own work, unless it's actually published.. all your thesis should be your own work anyway, unless otherwise cited.

Sorry to hear this. It sounds very difficult. This might be controversial, and I'm sorry if it offends you, but really I would advise you to leave unless he agrees to get help. Or stick it out until you are in a better situation yourself and then leave. These situations tend to get worse rather than better if someone is trying to deal with it on their own.
