An MPhil is not a failed PhD; only when someone starts a PhD and doesn't make it and then gets awarded an MPhil

Yes, saying you're interested in industry jobs might put off people and give the impression you don't want an academic job.

You can start looking for jobs as soon as you start your MPhil. It's quite unlikely that you will be able to find grants for an MPhil. You should probably think about doing part-time work simultaneously.

Anyone finishing this year?

So, update time. I didn't get any other funding, but I have got a part time job for 15 hours a week, so I should be fine.

My supervisor has now said I have to have a first draft done my Christmas... so really not sure how I am going to do that! I will just have to work 12 hour dates on the days I am not working...

I would suggest you stop mentioning you have no interest in academia - there's no need to tell people that at this stage.

I'm not sure about your other points.

The Year between PhD and Post-Doc - what do you do?!

A lot of positions are not advertised properly externally as they are just going to go to an internal candidate anyway

The difference between high 2:1 (67.4%) and first class degree (68%)
T

Employers will only look at a 2.1 or a 1st - they won't see the 1% so yes, it will make a difference, but only a small one. A 2.1 is still a good degree.

In most universities a first is 70% and if you get put up to a 1st from a 68% onwards, you should consider yourself very lucky. If universities inflate grades in this way, they are usually only doing it to make themselves look better.

Phd studentship

I have to disagree slightly with Ian. My supervisors said I showed specific subject knowledge in the interview, and that was one of the reasons they gave me the PhD (the other was my enthusiasm). They only thing I did to get this knowledge was to read about 5 recent papers published from the lab on the subject background and techniques, and memorise key details. This only took a couple of days so its achievable.

If I cannot succeed Phd can I leave in between and shift to another visa in UK?
T

Yes it would. If you cease to be registered as a student, your visa can be revoked. The university have to update the Home Office with the visa status of their students.

Can I get full time work right for studying Phd?
T

You usually get a 4 year or 4.5 year visa. Maybe it varies by country so you may get a 5 year one from India.

Bear in mind you are unlikely to finish in three years - most people submit in their 4th year and then you have to wait for the viva and you may get many months of corrections.

There are no lectures to attend - it is just research. But yes, it will be full time, sometimes more than fulltime. If you get a stipend or scholarship you will have plenty of money so you don't need to work another job.
