Great news

Relationship break up for a PhD student
A

Big hug from me too Nothing anyone can say will make you feel better but you will get over this in time. It's a cliche but it's true that time heals, although you probably won't believe it now as the pain is still so raw. Try to look after yourself and be with people who will look after you and let you pour your heart out to them.

You should be proud of your achievements and your partner should be proud of them too. Don't ever let anyone make you feel bad about your success. I agree with others, while it's good to stay friends, limit or avoid contact for now or it will make it much harder to move on. All best wishes for the future.

So, when are you going to finish???????

Robber, MTB_Girl, count me in too! I love my bike

PowerPoint presentation at my interview!
A

10 min presentation so aim for about 10 slides. Follow the usual format (intro/background to put the work in context, methods, results, discussion/conclusions) but in your case, I would concentrate on the methodology and trouble-shooting. It's a great opportunity for you to demonstrate your trouble-shooting skills and your perseverance in the face of adversity and they are must-have skills for any prospective PhD student! Practice your presentation until you are really comfortable with it and if you can, get feedback from your friends/peers/academics/anyone who will listen. Try to think of any obvious questions they might ask about the work so you can prepare possible answers. Best of luck, you can do it!

is it too late to apply for a biological science PhD now?
A

Yes, still some being advertised and still (my group's studentship for example) waiting to be advertised! You're worrying about not being able to find a studentship at this time of year and I'm worrying about not being able to find a student, doh! Hopefully we are both worrying unnecessarily Good luck!

How to protect your research?
A

Yes, it is usually the case that when you sign up for registration as a Uni student, the 'small print' states that you assign your IP to the Uni.

Research Assistant or PhD?
A

It may get you a bit more salary...but I wouldn't count on it! I just discovered that the tech in the tech job I left to do my PhD is now earning about the same as me (after 4yrs on post-doc salary)...so if I'd stayed in that job and not done my PhD, I'd still be earning more or less the same (bit galling!).

I used to hate the 'what are you going to do after?' question because people really can't get that (if post-doc-ing) you're basically going to carry on doing what you are already doing as a PhD student i.e conduct research!

I need a forum hug...please?
A

(((((Piglet)))))

Sorry the hug was delayed, been at a conference...

Have a great weekend!

Hi 404

Did they say when they would let you know? Not nice having to wait to hear. Fingers crossed for you!!

Best wishes

Fundamentle error???? arrrrgghhhhh
A

Take a deep breath and come clean, you'll sleep better in the long run. You can't go into a viva with this hanging over you. Far better that you confess yourself (to your supervisors and also publish an erratum relating to your paper) than be 'outed' by someone else. I do sympathise. How you handle this kind of thing can literally make or break your career so do the right thing and be honest. All best wishes.

Hi everyone! I'm back ...

I'm good thanks Wickid Cycling to work these days (well, few days a week anyway) but do keep thinking about your incident!! Glad to hear that you are on the mend!

The loser standing small

university lost my thesis
A

I'm not sure they are stored at the British Library - I certainly wasn't asked to produce a copy for the British Library, only the University (and supervisors). The British Library will have a record of the thesis abstract and if someone wants to borrow the entire thesis, I've always presumed that the British Library arrange to source it directly from the University library...

Annoying for you, obviously...but why the feeling that you need to resort to legal action? Presumbly you have your own copy of your thesis?
