Morning everyone, hope you all had great weekends!

I spent the whole weekend sorting out my garden; I HATE gardening and my garden is massive, so I'm really aching today from pulling up all those darn weeds!

My aim today is to edit my methodology chapter, and I also might need to nip into town at some point.

Have a good day!

Finally edited my monstrous chapter two so that's me done; have a great weekend everyone!

It's SO hard keeping focused when reading chapters isn't it?! Every time I keep getting down to read it, my mind wanders off again! The only thing that seems to work is using food as an incentive...I'm 9 pages away from a cheese and bacon stuffed spud (up)

Chapter 1 is edited, now to move onto the beast that is chapter 2!

Woohoo welcome back Linda! (up)(up)(up)

Hope everyone is getting along okay today. I didn't send my journal article off yesterday, but I'm actually glad I didn't as part of it needs editing! Not sure if I'll get round to it today either, but I'll try.

Goal 1- admin/emails etc
Goal 2- start editing journal article

Hi everyone!

I'm only just sitting down to work, for various reasons. Need to get a few tasks done today, but the main one is sending off my journal article- really hope I can do it!

Goal 1- sort conference stuff
Goal 2- edit journal article

Well done about your journal article Batfink, that's great news!

I've done goals 1 and 2, which means I've got the rest of the day to work on editing a previous journal article. I want to get the easy bits sorted before lunch, and then I'll have the afternoon to sort the not so easy edits!

Morning all!

Batfinkl and Benyaya, looks like you were busy over the weekend! I did absolutely nothing for 2 days, which was lovely.

I have a busy day today though, finalising things for my conference at the end of the week. I also wanted to get a basic plan together for another journal article I'd like to write, so I can get down to it straight away after my conference. And as if I wasn't busy enough, sup has given me feedback for a previous journal article I've written, which will keep me busy! I'd like to get that sorted today but not sure that will be possible. I'll give it a go though!

Goal 1- finalise conference presentation
Goal 2- do basic plan for next journal article
Goal 3- edit previous journal article based on sup feedback

Have a great day everyone!

Morning everyone!

Well I managed to squeeze a bit of baking in yesterday, but I really want to make lots of cupcakes today as I have family visiting at the weekend. So I fancy a leisurely afternoon doing that! But first I need to:

Goal 1- practice presentation
Goal 2- read over journal article and edit
Goal 3- decide what to wear for conference!

Have a great day all (up)

I've actually just left my gym for the same reasons really; too expensive and I wasn't going enough! So I want to get back into swimming, but I also fancy playing something like squash or badminton with hubby; not too challenging and fun (although mt hubs is very competitive!)

Sounds like you've both made progress- well done! I've finished the first draft of this journal article I've been writing yippee, it still needs a bit of work though, particularly the background section. I didn't get round to baking though so I'll be doing that tomorrow!

AHRC funding + full time job

Quote From Ashleywilliams:

Hi guys,

Thanks for your responses so far.

I'm not actually looking for reassurances around the feasibility of my suggestion in terms of timings, effect on sanity, etc. I'm wondering if it is actually possible to get away with this, or whether you'd be automatically caught. A few people on this forum allude to others being pulled up for doing this but I'm wondering how this happens, is it automatically detected from your tax code or does somebody need to dob you in?

I'm really looking for people who have pulled this off and not be caught, or those that have tried it and been penalised. Failing that, people who have first hand experience of others trying to do this. I've already had 2 great responses off this thread so thanks to those two.

Hmm, I've not ever heard of someone being 'caught' for doing it, I only imagine that could happen if your PhD work was suffering; then someone may do a bit of digging and find out and that could have an impact on your funding (though you'd probably just get told to jack the full-time job in and carry on with your PhD, I don't think they could just take the funding off you).

I don't think the tax man/AHRC and your uni all have each others' phone numbers; I don't think it can be detected from tax codes. For example, I have an ESRC studentship and the part-time jobs I've had in the past never know anything about my funding.

Sorry about all the 'I don't think' lol, I'm not certain on any of it as I've never known it to happen. Basically, as long as neither your PhD or your full-time job suffer, then I don't think anyone would really know. Just remember that your PhD may involve doing e.g research training/attending departmental meetings and going to seminars etc, so if you regularly missed then and had no explanation for it then that could prove tricky.
