Question about statistical data

As far as I know the biggest teaching unions are NUT (national union of teachers) and NASUWT (National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers).

Would anyone who does a Postgraduate Certificate in Education to get their teaching qualification be classed as having a post graduate degree? this is probably a fairly high proprtion of teachers.

I believe they are classed as having PG degree....but their percentage is not that high...I found somewhere (I can't remember where, because it was not what I was looking for) that teachers in primary education with a certificate in education are 6.2% and head teachers are 11.6%, which I believe are quite low numbers

wow that's a lot lower than I'd have expected! Sorry can't help more on where to find the data.

What would you do differently?

I wish I'd planned my project with future career in mind. There are a couple of things I could have done but didn't that would have made it easier to get a job afterwards. Ok I do now have a job, but in the future these things that I still can't do and probab;y won't get to do during this postdoc that would help me in my next move.

hhhmmm stats strange.. will check it out :)

You should hopefully be able to spot mine as I did (I think) fairly well on the dirst trial and only got to the forth screen for the second trial. The ball seemed to get caught bouncing back and forth at the top of the screen then gradually disappeared off it.

I was also wondering if there was any news, but was not 100% sure of the viva date. Fingers definitely crosssed (up) (closest thing to a fingers crossed smily!)

Researcher reflections?
C

I added something like this as the end of my thesis. Mainly because I had no idea how to finish so my supervisorsuggested adding a paragraph about how I felt about the research process, what I'd learnt, what I wanted to do next. he summed it up as 'life the universe and everything!' Reading it again previva I found this paragraph pretty cringeworthy! but I had to end the thesis somehow. I talked a bit about my expectations of the PhD - what I though the data was going to show, and then commented on how my views had been changed when I actually did the analysis. I finished with something lame about how much I had enjoyed the research process and wanted to continue with this in a research career.

Seriously messed up
C

Sorry to hear that Delta. I hate interviews too. Think I get too nervous, plus I'm not very good at bigging myself up so I end up being really vague and talking myself out jobs I'm qualified for on paper! Fingers crossed for the next one.

OK, seriously, tell me...(part 2)
C

I had a whole lot planned on what I would do differently if I went back and did my PhD again, and they barely asked m about it! Good luck Sneaks. I was dreading viva and it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it could be.

As for stars, I've been on three for AGES! Don't think I'll make 4 let alone 5!

I don't have a single direct quote in my thesis so can't help on that bit. Is there any way you could avoid having to direct quote to get round the lack of page numbers?
It was a few months ago now so I cna't fully remeber where I put the organisation name. I definitely had it in endnote as a website. I'll have to check. Otherwise I wouldn't worry too much on it. I don't think the examiners even looked at the references in my thesis! (probably other to check that there names were there :p )

I used APA 5th. I had a couple of websites as references in my thesis. I told endnote they were websites, and then let it decide how to display them in the text and in the referece section.

In text them came up as (Author, date) Though in the case of these I put the organisation as there wasn't a single author. In my case this becaue (The American College of Rheumatology, 1999).

in a mess

I didn't have a mock viva. I was encouraged by one supervisor but didn't want one.

Prep wise I read my thesis once in the week before. Copied down some generic sample questions and thought about how I might answer them (and didn't get asked any of them!). I looked up new research in the field (didn't get asked about it!) and re read a couple of key papers.

The most important prep was re reading my thesis. I was asked to summarise main findings from chapters, and had done that at the end of each chapter so could refer to it. Other than that they asked a lot about methods, some of which was explaining tasks or quesionnaires used where the examiners were not familiar with them.

Try not to panic. I think (based on y experience) that some people must seriously over prepare. I could have done a lot more than I did, and didn't end up needing half of it!

Good luck
