Sorry to hear that Delta. I didn't get shortlisted for an RA job a couple of months ago either. Hopefully more will come up next year.

would you apply for this post doc?
C

Maybe they read this thread, as I got offered the job this afternoon! eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

would you apply for this post doc?
C

I was looking through old posts and found this one.

really wish I'd taken people's advice. In the end I didn't apply for the job but really should have. i got contacted by the PI in October saying they'd interviewed and hadn't been able to appoint, so I was invited to apply when it was readvertised for the third time. Turns out six were interviewed first time round and we were all appointable (nice to know :-) ) Anyway I was interviewed for it again on Monday and now keeping everything crossed, but as it's been three days starting to lose hope. Annoying to think that had I applied in Spetember I'd have had a good chance of getting it!

rather than start a new job hunt thread thought I'd bump this one..............

To the people who interviewed me this week..........................PLEASE JUST GET ON AND LET ME KNOW! I had three post doc interviews this week and just want the waiting to be over! Interviews 1 and 2 were with the same PI and went quite well, interview 3, well the less said the better!

sloppy mistake-what would you do?
C

My sloppymistake is my graphs. I spent ages getting them right so you could tell which bar was which when printed in black and white (three bars, one white, one grey one black). In the end I photocopied mythesis from one print out, and only realised post submission that when photocopied the black and grey bars look almost identical. Just wish I'd considered this when getting it photocopied but it just never crossed my mind :$ I don't plan on saying anything. My examiners should be able to work it out as the key goes in the same order as the bars, but still is annoying.

Academia and personality type
C

ENFJ - The teacher!

I was surprised to be 25% into feeling. On the other hand there were a fair few questions where I found it difficult to say "yes" or "no" when my answer was really, "well sometimes I am but sometimes not, it depends on the situation!"

My friend used to teach on an Enneagram course and she did practice some of her sessions on me. I think I felt more affinity to the number 7 personality, I didn't really identify with any of them.

Viva prep
C

I've done nothing yet (viva 20th Jan). My SUp wants me to have a mock viva, I'm not sure I want one.

Not managed to cubmit papers either, but it's on my definite list of things to do!

Viva date
C

Thanks for all the responses, and good luck to the other January viva-ees!

I guess it won't be that bad having to travel. I'm only about 1 hour away and it will give me something else to think about on the day rather than sitting at Uni panicking. It will just be weird after, especially if me and my internal both have to travel on the same route, I don't think I'll want to travel with him, but also won't want to try and avoid him but keep bumping into him! Sure I'll sort something though. I have a couple of friends who commute so may see if either fancy meetign me for a train party on the way back!

Am glad to finally get a date, they struggled as my external could only do Friday afternoon and my internal taught then this term, so they started looking at other days but in London. Not 100% sure why it ended up still being in London now it's after Christmas. Think it's the danger of having a clinician as an examiner as they all seem ridiculously busy (my Sup is a Clinician and is very hard to pin down!)

Re not wanting to do much after. I think I am going to plan a meal and celebration for after. Although I'll probably be knackered, I think it will be a big anti-climax to finish my viva and just go home. The only worry is if it goes hidiously wrong.....

:p

Viva date
C

Well I finally have a date for my viva to panic about. It's not till January, but I have to travel to London for it as that's where my external is based and it turned out he couldn't possibly travel by train 1 hour for it :p

Is this normal? I'm not best pleased about it. Usually at my institution your supervisor has a bottle of bubbly chilling and everyone gathers in the coffee room afterwoods. I'll miss out on that :-(

paragraph spacing
C

I don't like indenting. Looks confusing. I used 20 point spacing in my thesis (about the same as 1.5 spacing) and then 20 point between paragraphs, which I think equates to an extra line between.

Living alone?
C

I lived in house shares for 12 years and can't say I ever had a really bad flat mate. The stories that end up online are worst case scenario, and they get there because they're interesting to read. No one wants to read "I moved into a flat share and met some really great people who three years later I still see regularly as friends" (true story on my part).

I spent my entire PhD living with 5 people. It meant my PhD studentship stretched a lot further and I was able to sustain myself writing up for another six moths after my funding ended. I'd never have been in a position to do that if I'd lived on my own. Of my housemates from my final houseahare, I didn't particularly get on with two of them, but equally didn't hate them. They were fairly curtious, paid the rent and bills on time, and as we wern't close friends, they left me alone to get on with my work.

Marking, A-Levels and First Years
C

I think I'm in a good mood today as I've found them all surprisingly good (first year essays). Or maybe it's because I was told I was being too harsh in my marking last week (second year lab reports). No howlers so far, but lots of criticism in the lab reports about the task being long, boring and repetitive and the participants might have resorted to pressing buttons at random! (an admission of guilt do you think?!)

Writing up in 100 days - jan 5th deadline.
C

Good luck with the deadline. I had a horrible summer but somehow got it done. I liked my friend's ethos - don't get it right, get it written! I was way too perfectionist for my first few chapters as I didn't want my supervisors to think badly of me! Towards the end I wrote my general discussion in three days!
