Dr Marasp!

Massive congratulations, Dr!!!!!!!
I'm finishing up this year too (hopefully) so it's great to read success stories!!!!!!

Working full time while finishing write up
E

Since I started my PhD I have been working full time, in another country, my first language is not the language of my PhD, I work in a completely different field than my research, my earlier studies (bachelor, MA and MBA) are not even close to the area of my reserach.... (so many difficulties, I know)
Now I am finishing my write-up and hopefully I will submit by October or by Christmas the very latest. Even though I still have time to fiunish off, I am tired and bored of my theisis....

I will not tell you it is an easy task. You have to work hard, make a schedule and follow it.
I am at work every morning until 2pm, then I go to the gym for an hour, then it is lunch, shower and study till 9 or 10pm.
I have never studied over the weekends, as I need time off.

It is difficult but it is doable!!!!!

Transfer Viva coming up, was given negative outlook, need advice
E

It is a difficult situation, but I would suggest just one thing: Get advise from your supervisor and start working on your report!

Have you talked to your sup? What is his/her view about the failed transfer report? Have you got any feedback from the committee? Have you discussed it with your sup?
Do have this discussion and then make a list of all the amendments that need to be addressed and work through them one by one.

Good luck!

English language help

I am looking for a verb that follows "military regime". Can I say "happened", "occurred", or is it something else?

Thank you!

Greek in search of MSc in UK
E

I don't think that you'll have any problems with your degree being from a TEI, as long as you have good grades (usually 2:1, which is around 6 in the Greek grading system).
I reckon you won't yave any problems with your references, also.

PS I am also Greek

Social Research Method
E

Quote From DrJeckyll:
I come from the science, and I think that your sample is too small. This limits the generalisability of your findings.
Consult with a statistician early when planning out the fieldwork. In order to control for other factors, you need more schools ( level2 units), which might be more important than number of students (level 1 units).

Good luck

In qualitative study you don't have to make generalisations. You can study X at a certain area and in a ceratin time period (i.e. when the research takes place).
e.g. how do girls aged 10-12 that live on a road full of foreigners perceive 'race'...... Or something like that

Social Research Method

I think that firstly you have to see where you will find participants. I mean, it's obviously OK with children who are in schools, but what about the never-schooled ones?

Then, if I were you I would look at other studies on similar subjects and see their methodology. I know there are plenty of studies from alla around the world, so, it won't be that difficult.

After that, you will form your own research methodology.

I don't think that anybody can advise you to choose this or that methodology. After all, it is your research and you are the only one who knows exactly what you want to study

"It was found" or It was proposed
E

I used a lot "it seems that", "data shows that", "the participants appear to construct this in this way" etc.

It depends on the theoretical framework that you are using

Quote From wanderingbit:
Ooh..Congratulations Emmaki!! :-) I'm sure that was such a great feeling! How's going now? Did your supervisors say till when would they send you feedback??

Still working on my analyses, I thought of getting material for 2 chapters (and papers) out of them, but now it seems I'll have to divide in 3 chapters...which is good and bad, since it means more work to do in the same (small) amount of time!

How's everyone doing? Are there other printed draft ready to be sent to your sups??

Wish you all a productive day!

Hey!
Thank you!!!!!!
It is a great feeling to have a finished 'product' in your hands, even if it still not a final draft.......
I will have feedback by the end of March, which gives me plenty of time to rest, and i sure need a goos rest!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done on having so much material that you can get three chapters and papers! It is more work, but it is rewarding.

Keep up the good work everyone

Why do we need to study what we studied during undergraduate?
E

I studied pre-primary education. In order to get my degree I had to attend and take exams on 48 modules (pedagogics to history of art and from psychology to management), plus some seminars and labs that I had to attend, without sitting on exams.

I don't feel that it was a waste of time. learned about so many different fields and saw that teaching in a classroom was not my only option.
So now, almost 13 years after graduating, I work in an area of education that I would have never thought of had I not attended a relevant course and I have two Masters in different fields and I am finishing my PhD in an other field that I also met in my undergrad years......

I am now holding printed my first full draft!!!!!!!!!!!
I masy sound very silly, but i feel sooooooooo happy!!!!!!!

There are still a couple of things to correct (in references mainly) and add (the appendices) and it is off to my supervisors......
I hope that you all have a very productive day, and soon share the same feeling!!!!!!

Here I am again, trying to keep myself accountable.
Yesterday I managed to do corrections on 1 and a hald chapters. So, today I have the rest half and one more that does not need so many corrections.
I need to finish with all amy chpaters by Monday, in order to have time for re-reading the whole thing, making the contents page(s), aranging the appendices etc by the end of the month the very latest.....
