Should I tell my supervisor about someone else's plagiarism?
H

Personally, I'd avoid getting involved. It's your supervisor's problem, sadly, which sounds very cold hearted, but supervisor/student relations can sour so quickly it's really not worth getting involved. It's not going to be rocket science for other people, possibly the supervisor, to notice the similarity between an internationally-renowned supervisor, and his student. Without being disparaging, it's probably easy to work out which one is cheating!

Part-time vs. Full-time PhD in UK
H

Hi, I read your post as if you're hoping you could almost hide the fact that your PhD was part time. I'd say the opposite, actually. I have done mine full time, but I think if you've combined it with working, even on a part time basis, that's an immense achievement and you should be proud, and open of that. Good luck!

Reviewing your potential examiner's book; silly idea?
H

I've been offered the chance to review and have published a review, which is fine, except the author is somebody who my supervisor mentioned in passing might be interested in examining my PhD. I would never be unduly critical, and there is nothing to say she would definitely be my examiner, but should I steer clear?! Thanks.

Excellent, I am not in the sciences. Focus then is finish the PhD, and spend the time between submission and viva presenting papers for publication. Thanks!

wow, no corrections as well! Amazing; very well done!

Finishing PhD whilst working full time- advice?
H

Hello, I'm in the same position, but I have been very fortunate to secure 20 hours of a fairly well paid work a week, but this is only until December. I spent much time worrying about this, and am at a similar stage as you are. I have just tried to tell myself, mentally, that even working 3 hours at night after work and weekend days is only temporary, and if you've done so much of the work already, it really is the last bits. Best of luck!

Thank you, both. I just was concerned that perhaps it might appear that my research isn't very good if it hasn't been published; in fact, I've had many supervision issues that have meant I was behind, and so have pretty much just been writing across the last twelve months. I hope that I have time to at least get some publications under consideration after submission. Do you need to be affiliated to a University to publish? (I'm thinking if I can't secure an academic job, but pass the viva). Thanks

How many did you have, by the viva. I'm seriously worried as, presently, only have book reviews and am so busy finishing the PhD that I have no time to try and prepare stuff for publication. I currently have on under review, but realistically cannot see me having chance to write anything else before Christmas. Is anybody else having this problem, or am I worrying unnecessarily? Do publications (or lack of) have any say on your viva?

Teaching hours as GTA - query
H

Hi. I have just finished my period as a GTA and, personally, I would just suck it up. You're sat in, not delivering, the lecture and I wonder whether it is worth causing a fuss about an arrangement that will probably only last until Christmas, after which you will have a month off. I would then, if the arrangement persists in January or starts anew, point out that I had done additional hours the previous term; I think that would appear more accommodating of you. In any case, the chance to attend the lectures is useful and might actually save you some preparation time, as you will know exactly what the students need to be doing. Good luck!

Editing: how long?
H

Thanks, that's encouraging! So, if I realistically aimed for Christmas, I'd have more than enough time? I was noticing that we need to give two month's notice to submit, I'm a little worried about doing this in case I end up over-running! I have no funding, but have until the end of September 2014 to submit, before my University gets worried! Is it a good idea to have it pretty much finished, before entering the notice to submit? :)

Editing: how long?

Hello,

I'm a new user, and I am just writing my final chapter of a History PhD, although I also need to do the introduction and conclusion. Two of my chapters require quite a bit of editing, mainly cutting and tightening up, but the others are more minor points. With that in mind, when is a reasonable time scale to be expect to be submitting? I currently work part time as I am not funded, 24 hours a week. Many thanks in advance, I'm struggling to see the end at the moment!
