Conference papers Vs Journal papers???

Conference presentations are good to have on your CV, but publications are what really count! (especially if you're first author).

Can males over 18 to take part in my online questionnaire for my MSc in Forensic Psychology?

Hi Emily, like Ultra, I'm a gay man too, and I think that maybe the questions should not be gender specific....however that would be difficult given the nature of many of them, so I didn't complete it. I also found some of the questions a bit disturbing to be honest :0.

Hi everyone :) Thanks for your replies, it's been really useful and reassuring to hear them! I seem to have gotten over my slump and it's full steam ahead again - who knows how long for!

5 months to go and a mountain to climb...

My funding runs out in October and I honestly feel more overwhelmed than ever. No way am I going to finish within the 3 years (more like 4). I've responded to this by feeling depressed and doing absolutely nothing - makes no sense I know, but the more I need to do the less I actually do. Could do with hearing some positive stories from fellow posters who are/were at this stage and came through it all!

Thanks :)

Supervisor....Again.

Quote From foundmyselfinlawschool1morning:
Thanks satchi. Sad to say that your response was more encouraging than my entire School. It i a very political place and a lot if fighting.
I have kept the list of all meetings from the first time I stepped inside the gates of the place. I can show that in 2 years I have had nothing reviewed at all despite emails asking for feedback.
The stalking sounds like a wonderful plan except my supervisor wouldn't care. Pretty much given the run of the place. Very irritating. On a side note if any Phders wanted to volunteer for the position of stalking I wouldn't say no :)

Ok this sounds completely unacceptable. Do you have your University handbook to hand? When you start all PhD students should be given written confirmation of what they can expect to occur and written proof of this should be happening regularly (i.e. meetings with supervisors should be written up and documented). If you haven't been given the support you are entitled to then you have every right to complain - it won't look bad on you but it will look bad on your supervisor if it shows they haven't been doing what they are supposed to do. Do you have a secondary supervisor at all? Having more than one supervisor is supposed to stop things like this happening.

I feel bad for you :( I really hope things can get sorted out because you are quite far into the process now.

A bit of encouragement for those of you who are struggling

Minor revision sent back to reviewers
Avatar for lemonjuice

If it was submitted to a peer reviewed journal, the corrected revisions are sent back to the original reviewers so they can take another look. Nothing to worry about, just standard practice.

Advice Needed: Upset supervisor and submission of journal articles

Quote From Fled:
BTW, in North American culture, an unanswered email after just 1 week tends to be perceived as discourteous, especially in a professional setting (which I consider a PhD candidature to be). It appears I may have to readjust my expectations of UK supervisors before I start in a few weeks.

It's the same here - you get some people who are faster at replying than others. My primary supervisor responds 99% of the time the same day I sent the email.

Re. the original post. I'm sorry caltech28, but your supervisor has every right to be angry. Yes I agree he should have been quicker to reply, but his name will be on the article(s) so his reputation is at stake. Personally I wouldn't proceed with publications and wait for your supervisor to respond and then resubmit them. If someone submitted an article with my name on and I hadn't had chance to read and give feedback I would demand they take it down. Sorry.

Nearly Failed Viva

Quote From TheGoodShip:
I've lurked on here for a while. Well, I say that. When I was preparing for my viva, I read all the 'revise and resubmit' and 'failed viva' horror stories. Jesus, they make you anxious before you take your viva!

Anyway, I didn't think that I could possibly fail my PhD. I've done tons of work. But in the end I ended up fighting for my pass. I got lucky. I did pass with minor corrections, but I've seen from my examiners' report that two of the three initially recommended revise and resubmit.

So, rather than share a horror story, I thought I could do something useful! I am going to blog a bit on here 'from the other side'. Because although I did loads of work (in a humanities subject), I sorta missed the point. And it was avoidable...

.... more to come....

Congrats on passing and I look forward to reading the blog! :)

master and Phd in one programe

If you want to study in mainland Europe (as opposed to the UK), then an MSc is essential I think. There are combined MSc/PhD (1 +3) in the UK, as I was going to apply for one but did my MSc separately in the end....as for France and Canada I'm not too sure. Maybe an MSc first and then apply separately for PhD is best in this case?
