You degree is very specific but could translate into not only a postgraduate science degree but also one in the social sciences. I know of a few students in my department (Social sciences) that come from science backgrounds and are using those backgrounds to inform and add new discourse to social fields like international development, sociology and cultural studies. Well, you might want to try looking for funding from your local/national governing bodies. Your academic/professional background sounds very specific and this could be helpful in finding funding within certain departments that might teach on your specific subject area. Please have a look at programmes offered at the University of Sussex. I am currently doing an MA in Globalization, Ethnicity and Culture at Sussex and I am very happy with my experience. The School of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies has an exciting selection of tailor made MA programmes (mine as an example) that meet very specifice, diverse and also broad academic interests. The Institute for International Studies at the University of Sussex is exemplary and considered to be amongst the strongest Institutes of Development studies in the world. As a Sussex postgraduate student (not studying at IDS, but in an affiliated department) I can say that this reputation holds true. The amount of scholarship and reserach that eminates from IDS is astounding and important. I'm studying globalization here and we often read from IDS sources. IDS offers an incredible array of lectures, panel discussions and professional support. Brighton as a place to live is another big draw - on the coast, less than an hour away from London, and affordable. What have done in the last three years? I was out of academics for two years after my undergraduate degree and then decided to go for a Masters. Your fields seem to very general in subject coverage and this lends well to what your essay might center on. Why not write about a personal anecdote that might link into these fields and elaborate on how your background, this particualar anecdote and your passion for learning have lead you to write your essay. Not sure if your completely set on the greater london area, but the University of Sussex in Brighton has a very strong background in the sciences (probably the strongest field at the university). Brighton is less than an hour away by train, cheaper than London, on the coast and offers great social life from tons of live music to a great cultural scene. I think that you could very well prove to be an attractive candidate to a university. Though marks are a definite consideration in admission decision, they are not the end all of the process. University administrators look at the entire 'candidate' - your work experiences, travels abroad, community service involvement, honors and awards, publications (if any), and leisure activities and sport all combine with marks to form a candidature profile. I would suggest finding a programme that interests you and writing to the convenor and explaing exactly why you connect with the program and what the criteria for selection are.
