masters or phd?
L

Hi,

I am currently working on my MA in the UK and as an American citizen I was unable to secure any funding, but with your history of residency in the UK I would definitely pursue this funding that maybe available. I can say that my university was very helpful in all of my funding inquiries. I would suggest contacting the doctoral programs you are interested and explaining your residency history and funding situation - they might prove to be very helpful. Also a great website on graduate study preparation is www.postgrad.com - there's a useful program search function.

Good Luck!

What is the process for applying for a PhD?
L

The best preliminary step in applying for a doctoral program is to contact instructors who are teaching in your field of interest.
Cheers.

I can only recommend looking into the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship - might be a resource. If you do decide to pursue postgraduate study in the UK - www.postgrad.com/forums is a useful sight for researching programs over here. Good luck (I know how hard/impossible it is to find funding)

I'm currently an international student in the United Kingdom and I've had a great experience here. I would recommend that you come here for your postgraduate studies - the progams on offer here highly individualized, I could not find the same programs in the US. A helpful website is www.postgrad.com/forums - full of useful informaiton as you begin you program search. Good luck!

Masters Social Life
L

I've had a very fullfilling social life as an MA student in the UK. I think this because I am a good multitasker and try to fit in as much in a day as possible. Something that I found to work very well is to plan out bigger social outings (i.e. concerts, theatre, film nights and parties) before the term starts and let my mates know far in advance so we can plan ahead and get cheaper tickets to gigs. A good site for info on postgrad life is www.postgrad.com - loads of info there! Cheers

I was considering the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada - seemed to be affordable. The campus is on the beach and Vancouver is a great city.

Hi-

The Ford Foundation might also prove to be a resource for funding. You can google their webpage and find your nearest foudnation office - I believe the closest one to Malaysia is in China. A good resource for funding info is www.postgrad.com. Good Luck!

Urgent! I Need Help!
L

I've been looking into PhD programs to follow up with after I finish my MA in September. I haven't come across any online PhD "courses" persay, but I think that you should able to contact a professor/university department and explain your situation. I'm sure if you found a suitable disertation supervisor who would be willing to supervise through correspondance - shouldn't be a problem. I'll be writing my MA disertation in the United States this summer and communicating with my advisor by phone and email. A good place to find PhD resources is www.postgrad.com. Good Luck!

Taught course or what?
L

A taught course is a degree based on a core programme of taught coursework (class taught by professor). This means that you will normally have taught courses during fall and spring term and a disserataion during the summer. A reserach degree - MSc or PhD are based on research as opposed to taught courses. Good luck!

Development Studies at LSE, Cambridge or Sussex?
L

Hi,
I am currently doing a MA in Globalization, Ethnicity and Culture at the University of Sussex. Though I am not an IDS student, I am very much aware of the reputation and reserach that eminates from the school. Many of the texts that I read for my programme are authored by IDS faculty and indeed the institute is among the, if not the, strongest development focused institutes in the world. I'd highly recommend not only IDS but also Brighton as a great place to live and work! A helpful resource for postgraduate life here in England is www.postgrad.com. Good luck!

Urgently need advice about PhD funding for international students, help please!

Graduate research or teaching assistantships might be a possible way to fund your PhD work. I too am considering doing a PhD in the UK as opposed to my home country (the United States) due to the program duration as you stated. I've come across a few teaching assistantships in the UK, but you do have search. A helpful website is www.postgrad.com - loads of information for international studies considering postgraduate study in the UK. Good luck!
