It's a third!!!
O

It's not too late to become an academic achiever. If they won't accept you for your master of choice in economics, just try to get accepted for another, similar master in teaching universities (although even in such institutions quite often a 2.2 minimum is required). Once you are accepted for another master, work extremely hard try to get a distinction or at least merit, then people will look more at that than at your undergraduate third. Then, you can choose to apply again for a masters in economics, for a PhD or for a job in industry. Although the whole process will take another 1.5 years, you can only win if you work hard from now on.

What's wrong with academics

4. They think it's good practice to be snobby

5. They think it's good practice not to greet PhD students on the corridor

No of Participants

Don't quit!

I know many people myself who did semi-structured interviews and had only 10-15 participants. Search the forum, there are actually a number of threads on this issue.

It's a third!!!

WHY did you get a third? Lazyness, or extenuating circumstances, or a combination of both? It might be useful to answer this question, in all honesty and without any sarcasm.

what school am I looking for
O

Thanks for your enquiry. Very inspiring. If I were you, I would try to avoid to say foolish things like "my research is based on broad generalizations" - no academic likes to hear these sentences and they shouldn't appear in your application, if avoidable.

Maybe a Master in one or all of these subject disciplines would be useful to help you where you belong. It is importatant to understand that a PhD is usually a very in-depth and narrow academic enquiry in one particular field. At least you need to know this field before you apply, you can later still go into all this multi-disciplinary stuff; however, in reality it will very difficult to publish later as journal editors like to bounce you from one subject area to another.

No, I think you are all fake and one single person. There are many indicators for this, not just the similarity of usernames; also the content itself, logical flaws, coincidental probabilities, writing styles, etc.

Have fun on yourself, though...

Athens and Journal access
O

Exactly. If he won't offer you one end of this week just post here again and I will be able to forward you access per email or similar.

What is the problem in using someone else's Athens username and password?? My whole department is using the same password.

Academics seem to have a tendency to make simple things very complicated.

Viva preparation... Horrible external examnier
O

"My thesis is weak, from my point of view" == maybe it would be worth to try to make it better before you submit and also to double check for grammar, spelling and punctuation. Some examiners can be very annoyed about the latter.

Help! I am unsure about whether to do an MA or Mphil

sure you want to go into academia and take up lecturing? ARe you aware of the possible implications for your life, both positive and negative?

Marketing PhD Any opinions!
O

Be aware that as a lecturer, you will not be able to focus entirely on teaching. In fact, teaching will be at the bottom of your agenda, priority-wise, career-wise and probably time-wise. Your main focus will be on doing research, playing the academic publication game, and so on.

"Loving to teach the subject" is maybe not the right motivation. Just a thought.

Leave PhD for job?
O

On a more serious note. Take the job. You haven't wasted too much time with your 6 monhts in and as Badhairc. has said, academia can wait. In fact, you can always come back, later, when you will have more time for this time-consuming hobby called PhD research or just for fun. Now is the time to make money. If you don't, you get older too quick and probably too detached from the real world to be able to go back ever. Seriously, PhD research is like travelling to Mars in a spaceship that has never been tested before. What happens is: you lose touch to friends/family/partner and you lose touch with the real world. Additionally you might die along the way as nobody has never been there before (i.e.quit/fail/give up). Once you successfully arrive as the first human being on that planet called Mars, two things have happened: you're probably much older, and all the people you've ever known have forgotten about you.

Summary: run while you can

Leave PhD for job?

UFO, the new Superman. Super-UFO enrols for his/her PhD, gets a fulltime job as an investment banker, works 16 hours a day, comes back home, works all night, completes the part-time PhD in less than 2.5 months.

Maybe I should have considered this?

Fair enough. What you said makes sense, TheCoastman.

On the other hand, there are still some users on this forum who are on mySpace, YouTube, facebook and this forum with their real name (you know who you are). Maybe it would be worth re-considering this for obvious reasons.
