Having a bit of a crisis
P

Big hug to you. You've been very brave sharing it all on here and are taking the right steps seeing your GP. How about sending an email to your supers, but keeping everything brief literally "I have suffered a recent breavement and things are difficult at home and with my partner." Just be to the point and ask if you can have a quick meeting FTF to discuss time off etc

response to FT job application - am I mad to take a FT position before finishing?
P

In a bit of a panic about jobs & with my financial
situation so dire, I have been tentatively sending off my CV for jobs. I have had a response for quite an interesting and possibly well paid position, and they’ve said they are very interested in me but are concerned about when I am finishing ( between us, 6-8 months away), however I have heard of people taking jobs and writing up in the evenings and weekends. I know it would put a lot of extra pressure on the PhD but at the same time I am wondering if it would help me focus? Also if it means I am already employed I wonder if it would really matter that the thesis might take an extra 3 months or so. Its a commercial job so it is possible for me to "play down", whats really left to do.

What does everyone think?

How's the summer going?
P

helloo Nimrod

Summer has been good. Better than last year -when I just procrastinated, built my iTunes library, was broke, a bit lonely & then felt guilty for the lack of output. I made sure I planned my summer a bit better this time around to avoid wasting the time and then feeling sh** about it.
I took 3 weeks straight, off to have a proper holiday, & then went abroad to two conferences and one in the UK over a period of 2 and a half weeks and am now back to the books & writing up. But am only working about 3-4 days a week and use the rest of the time to do long weekends or ladies who lunch type stuff - gym, yoga, lunches, seeing family & I am finding that actually I am being much more productive than usual.

Shame about the UK weather though.

sorry for car-crash grammar!

names, marriage and phd?
P

Wierd I was discussing this with my b.f only last week. Dr trumps Mrs.
Once your a Dr then that is your title and if you became a Dr under your maiden name I think it is usual to keep this even if you get married.
Most of my friends who have recently got married who are not and have no intention of ever being a Dr , seem to be chosing to hang on to their family names anyway - or go the double barrel route. I think it is being common much less common or expected these days.

Help I've been invited to do a talk
P

Do it. Do it.

It's only 10 minutes of your life and will fly by I promise. Once you've done it - you'll be so much the better for it and probably really want to present at more things. Don't worry about getting ripped to shreds in Q&A- I have never seen this happen to anyone at a conference ( well only once where the presenter was VERY senior Proff and there was obviously something a bit personal going on).

Explain at the begining that you're only in your first year and developing a thesis outline - no-one will expect you to provide a solid work of genius - you're doing a PhD ergo are learning, it is OK to say I don't know or I haven't actually thought about that etc. Questions are good because they provide info on where you need to make your work clearer etc and you need to look on it as usefull.

Bakuvia ( i always see baklava...mmm..yummy... when I read your name). Thanks so much - this is v.helpful & you're so right about the intro suggests the beginning lol, it's funny how we get so bogged down with details and forget the blindingly obvious.

ps I am technology /culture too!

Hi all & thanks for the responses and not making me feel like a numpty for asking such a dumb question.

I actually sit somewhere between social sciences ad humanities. Thesis is mainly communications, but with a bit of socio-economics and cultural studies thrown in.
I am starting writing up and supers want me to produce an outline of how it will work first for approval. Its a nightmare - historical approach v thematic approach blah blah blah, and there doesn't appear to be any type of template for the where the introduction should sit. I sat there yeserday with a pad and a packet of felt-tips, drawing flow charts ???. Basically, I think I am getting a bit hung up on it. But good advice about lit review/ intro combo and that will make it a lucky "number 7" set of chapters; as from reading the thread the other day it seems that having an odd number of chapters is vital to sucess in later life.
