I am 1.5 yrs in. My sup never pushes, is tremendously ambitious but likes suggesting the opposite of what I propose just to see how strong my convictions are.
I know her by now!
I have 2 reviews, 1 theory paper, 1 theory paper with sup, 1 empirical paper under review, 1 mini comm (3k words). Am submitting my 3 empirical chapters (writing now) to journals quite a bit before thesis submission, over this year and early next. I have far too many conference presentations and will cut some out of the CV.
*but* this is highly unsual in my dept and field.
I do not think your sup is unambitious,. they are worried correctly about thesis completion, are trying to set reachable targets and not be pushy.
Supervision involves both inspiring and restraining I think
I am an international student so my expenses were about 4 times that of yours. My father made a similar offer to partially support.
I didnt take a penny and work to earn my rent, half the tuition and some food.
If you have no problems otherwise with taking money from your parents ( i had and have a problem with my dad on this matter) i would say take most, part or all of it.
The way I am doing it is not good for one's emotional or physical health. But my bloody tuition fees is 12k a yr, and London rent. You will proly be able to work 15 to 20 hrs a week and get some dept funding and take the rest from them.
"He believes in equality between rich and poor, black & white, straight and gay, old & young, immigrant & citizen"
Oh wow. Who on earth wouldn't claim that? What on earth will ever prove this? How on earth is this something 'special' you are doing?
You aren't convincing anyone here as you notice...

Lovely thread :)
I was educated halfway across the globe, but here goes: I went to a private, girls school. I love my school to bits, till today, my teachers keep in touch with me till today. my history teacher emailed last week saying -
"PhDbug my dear - How are you? I know I will lecture here like an old teacher, which I am, but are you eating properly? You must look after yourself to keep your brain working child...etc etc.."
She is so sweet! Plus I was Head Girl and school had lovely pre-classes activities from clay modelling, to dance to debate to theatre to choir and the girls all had to take up at least two.
I made my best friends at school and most of the girls have done very well!
Oh and then I stayed on for the last two years of school and they had the most awesome humanities teachers. And then I did my first degree a tad younger than some pals (17 to 20) at a girls institution which was state, and unlike my school (which had an all round excellence kinda thing going), this was known for acadmeic excellence. Nothing more nothing less. So, it was a change from private to state and from tons of activities to just reading.
My school completely built me, and I love it to bits!!!
Hmm great going everyone! (teek at least you won't get brittle bones in later life!)
Breakfast was 2 apples and green tea. Lunch was a bagel with boiled chicken, lettuce and tomato, and a slice of choc cake. In a little while snack will be green tea and a banana. Then apple late eveningish. Dinner will be just anything (for I've had 4 a day by now) plus a pear and green tea for dessert
:)
Thnaks Eska! Am still here and will go end of month!
Day began at 9, came back at 8 - three 2.5 hr long (each) meetings in between - I guess anyone might feel drained out (and I survived all day right through the middle of the last meeting at about 7ish on a banana, a cup of milk and some boiled beets and beans all day till I felt a bit faint)
