How often do you see your supervisor?
S

I see my supervisor almost every week HAHAHAHA
I am also very fond of him but we dont have coffee break or much chit-chat.
Maybe just small talk before work, like how are you, and I say good and thats the end of the chit chat :-)

hair question again
S

hey we have lots of ideas now, what should I do now? :-) I'm going out tomorrow, I will go and scout around for the INOA thing, and see if I can afford that first time in a salon! My main goal is just to cover my whites... I have some idea how to colour hair at home (having seen my sister but for her its different she has short hair and she does it so quickly I have never seen any mess in the bathroom).

Thanks so much for the helpful ideas girls

hi cobweb, I must have missed your post!
yes I agree with you, the natural look is the best; but now I have whites sticking out the top of my head :-)
have to go with the ageing process I guess.....haaaaa...

if i have all white everywhere, its ok. but the ones sticking out the top of my head...ohhhh

why does your hair take 3 hours to dry? do you have them pleated? I have relatively little hair, I guess, so it dries quite fast.

hair question again

hi girls thanks for your helpful suggestions.
Eska what is toners and shaders, where can I get these?
How bout those semi-permanent wash in colours? Do they do the same damage as permanent colours?

My hair is white on the top of my head, or getting whiter and whiter, maybe its this phd, I don't know :-)
I really don't mind it, but I do get comments from friends... "why dont u colour your hair" "hey, so much whites"
I have seen customers at hair salons getting those foil-treatments, I dont know how much that costs, I was thinking of buying a box to self-dye.

hi walminskipeas
I like this one http://hairstyleschat.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/modern-hairstyles.jpg
I like this because its nice and trendy. But I think you have to decide based on your head shape and face too :-)

Since you have thick hair, how bout LONG hair? If you have thick hair, this will look good.
You will only suffer the first few months because your hair growing past your nose might be irritating (!!!) but this is just for a while, and then you can tie it up, I have seen males with long hair and they look good.

But if you are balding infront, please dont have long hair.

Please post us after you have had your haircut :-) I am so curious :-)

No Motivation, No Support, Ready to Quit - Help!
S

hi foreigntaiwanphd,
I read your post and am a bit confused; but before that let me congratulate you for taking that first BOLD STEP to go to Taiwan and study! I cannot even speak the language of my ancestors properly!!! WeLL DONE!!!

You say that you have a generous scholarship, the more you study your new research topic the more you enjoy it (but no background) and you are looking for a tutor who speaks good English. And your supervisor is very nice (but he is non-existent and quite incompetent, were you referring to the same person?), given you data (without you having to plod around for it) and you are currently working on a paper that should definitely be published! Isn't that great.

What rut do you mean exactly? Do you mean the struggle that you go through trying to teach yourself?

I know its difficult to be in a new field, but I guess if you want to stay in Taiwan you would either have to complete this phd (difficult or not) or try find employment there (what are the immigration regulations for work...) (before you quit this phd!) BUT since you have some good points: good data, publishing paper soon, how about continuing this struggle.

Are you spending too much time in your speech club and tutoring? Perhaps you could also find someone and make arrangements to have this tutoring; and that even includes going home to your own country during a holiday, for example contact people who know this and ask them. Keeo asking and keeo looking.

I am also doing my phd in a different field. So everything is new to me. I had a part time job working 12 hours per week but I gave it up so I could have more rest. Now I feel better because I can sit in the evening and read. Previously I was so tired coming home I couldn't concentrate.

If you still cant find anyone and still stuck in Taiwan with the struggle but happy with learning hua-ye and your part time work, then you have to find a way to make sure you PASS your viva and get that phd.

best of luck

Are my PhD dreams over?
S

hi mystic guru
I have some friends who did non-lab based phds (from lab-based masters!). You could even switch fields, doesn't have to be about DNA anymore. It definitely works.

Some crazy ideas: topics within research governance, management (which type!), health issues, psychology (lots of branches!), you could even go into Criminology and Deviance studies... yes I know I am crazy crazy

What do you want to do? Its a matter of looking for and finding it.
You do have a lot of options! You just need to sort out your finances, time, payments etc.etc.

btw, 31 years old is a good age :-)

I am just up from bed---was supposed to go to sleep early but looks like it was just a nap.
Just checked mail and theres one from my sup to meet tomorrow!
I will be working on my data tonight....

What's 'Kim'?

This evening I watched a bit of Ratatouille. I really tried to sleep (for the night) but I can't.

hi kashyap
you have done everything within your power, yes you are right you just have to wait and see.
I am in year 2 phd. I like this forum, sometimes people write a lot of rants, in reading more and more rants it can make people (who are reading them!) even more depressed! But the plus points of this forum is that (rants aside) very often I read good advice from well-meaning members.

Try not to worry about time (about delay). You will be ok (up)
So now we just wait for your good news :-)
