Fave books (non-fiction and fiction)

Have read the binding chair and I have empress Orchid but havent read it yet. I think the binding chair and snowflower give a good insight into foot binding totally different to how I imagined it to be. Have been winding my boyfried up about it ever since I read snowflower, he says it makes him feel sick Don't know why though.

I'm embarassed to say that I actually cried when reading snow flower, have never cried over a book before must have been good

The Kitchen God's wife is really good, I think it's Amy Tan's best book, better than the joy luck club.

Choosing your institute/anyone worked for Ness or Roslin?
S

Teek, just out of curiosity do you have any relevant work experience for the PhD you applied for or do you just have an Undergraduate degree?

Just wondering what it would take to get into a place like Roslin.

I Got a 2ii MEng Chemical Engineering. Really what to do a PHd....Help

why do u think you will get a 2:2 if you say in your first year you got 66 %?

I got 66 % in my first year, 79 % in my 2nd year and 74 % in my final and got a first.

You should be more optimistic

Are you going to work in your PhD during the summer?
S

I get 27 days a year plus bank holidays. Is that good?

How old were you when you started your PhD?
S

Yea your'e right. I guess I'm just hung up on it coz I wasted 2 years because I didnt really know what I wanted to do (spent 2 years doing a law degree before changing to biological sciences). However I think that it helped me to realise what I actually wanted to do.

Finishing PhD early
S

Im starting my PhD in October and in the timetable I have been given which includes when and how long it will take to complete the major aspects of the project, it says that the project including thesis write up should be completed in 3 years! With only 3 months to write up thesis. I think this is too ambitious, not sure if I will be able to do it all. Hope so

How old were you when you started your PhD?

MPhil or PhD?
S

Im in the UK and will be doing my PhD UK.

MPhil or PhD?
S

Hi guys
I just wanted to clear something up. I have reccently been offered a PhD and was told that if you had a first or masters you would be registered for a PhD directly but if you have a 2:1 you will be registered for an MPhil in the first instance and would then upgrade to a PhD. I have a first class degree and will have completed my masters by the time I start my PhD in October so will be registered for the PhD. However I thought that for all PhDs you were registered for an MPhil initially regardless of whether you got a 2:1, first or masters.
Does anyone know what the actual situation is with regards to this?
Thanks

EU students and NERC/BBSRC, additional funding?

Glad to here that you found something and I agree with with everything you said. The UK is part of the EU and therefore I think any benefits paid for by UK tax payers should extend to all EU member citizens

Look there is no need to get personal about this.. Whether you were joking or not people should not make jokes which may offend others AND if I feel offended by something then I have every right to say so.

Well I don't strictly agree with that in an ideal world, but yes it makes sense practically. However as Arjen said that in other european countries UK students are eligible for full scholarships then I have to agree that it seems unfair.

Well as i can only read the words you had typed I did not know you were joking.

I dont understand what you mean by personal adgenda, I just felt that the conversation was getting a little bit offensive.
