Oh Linda! I used to have sinusitis all the time when younger so I really feel for you. I hope you manage to get some work done!
I've only just sat down for my usual 'couple of hours' with a nice cuppa:-) weather isn't that great out there so it's easier to focus on work. I got an email from one of my sups with feedback on my article so will need to tackle that (how did I guess that was coming I wonder??).
Sorry you didn't get the job Batfink. Have a great time in Helsinki though :)
I'm only working for a couple of hours today so will be focusing on my methodology chapter. I'm still waiting for feedback from sups on article, deadline for revisions is Friday so there's a chance I may need to drop everything once again. I'm not having much fun at the minute but at least I can still see the light at the end of the tunnel :)
Hello everyone!
Natassia, I use subheadings whenever I can as I find it helpful. In the lit review, I used them to slowly focus on the topic of my research and to ensure the text flows if that makes sense.
I hope you managed to finish your lit review yesterday Emmaki.
I'm not able to spend a lot of time on the thesis today as had some chores to do and I'm also seeing the midwife soon but I have been able to get a few bits done and still have some time left before setting off. I'll just do a bit more reading for my methodology and that will be me for the day.
Very well done Button!
I hope everyone is well. I only stopped by briefly as I thought today was Batfink's interview. I may have gotten the wrong date but just wanted to say good luck to you, Batfink!
Quick update from me, work has slowed down quite a bit as I've not been well recently. I'm feeling a bit better now so will slowly get into the swing of things. I'm taking it easy mostly so the only goal for today is to do some reading to edit my methodology chapter.
Hi Linda! Nice to have you back!
You all seemed to have had productive days!! I'm still working on my lit review. I finished earlier than planned as I was tired and thought I had all the info there only to remember I need to add a few more bits on the way home:-s a task for tomorrow now.
I can't say I've come across anything similar but, if it was me, I'd have an open conversation with the sup. I don't think presenting the research prior to it being published is a problem per se to be honest, I'd be more bothered about him lifting my work without permission. Are you able to approach him at all?
Thank you for the support!
I know I should take it easy as much as pos but I don't like being behind with stuff, even if the sole reason is because I've been working on the article and the conference. I feel I need to catch up before I start my mat leave but I know it won't happen as there isn't enough time to catch up with everything. It's so hard to be a perfectionist sometimes :p
Anyway, I really want to get my lit review edited before then though so I've been working on it today. I'm hoping that the bulk will be done by Friday and then I can move onto the next chapter. I've got another couple of bits to do now but I'm hoping I'll be done in an hour or so...
I too didn't have a great viva and ended up with r&r. what you describe doesn't sound fair but I agree with Frazzled that you should wait for the report. It should give you a detailed list of all the amendments required. If you're unsure about any of the revisions, you can ask for clarification (this may need to be done through someone else though) but as far as I understand, the examiners will not be involved in the process itself. They may wish one thing or another added but you don't need to agree with them, just add them if that makes sense. For example, I've been advised to 'consider changing' a fairly important aspect on my thesis. I have considered, discussed with my sups and I still feel that my way is best. So I shall be adding a long explanation of alternatives considered and why my choice is found to be the best option. See what I mean?
Hi all!
I've not managed to catch up with the posts from the last week but I hope you're all well.
I ended up taking last week off as tiredness is really affecting me now and I'm also going to have to cut down on the hours I work on the thesis from now on. I know it's for the best but I can't help worrying at the moment as I'm behind already.
I decided to go to the local uni's library for the afternoon which was helpful as I had no internet connection so that helped. I've finally managed to finish my journal article. Will have a last read tomorrow before emailing it to sups and then crack on with thesis. I only have another few weeks before mat leave so will try to make the most of it.
I haven't heard of anything similar happening either. I'm not in Engineering but in my field, who your supervisors are do not make a difference on the outcome of your phd. I have been encouraged to publish as apparently this would help but I have never been told it would guarantee a phd.
I'm sorry I can't really help. The only suggestion I have is for you to do the best you can. You've come this far already which is an achievement in itself so you may as well go for a phd.
Good luck!
Oh no! I hope your eyes recover quickly Batfink! It's the weekend!!
Thanks Button. Its the end of the day for me, or almost, I'm having a last read at my conclusions, then putting it all together before printing it. I'll have a last read before bed and email it to sups tomorrow morning.
I was wondering about publishing... Whether my paper gets accepted for publication or not won't affect the outcome of my viva, right? So, I'm publishing because I want to (rather than I need to in order to get the phd) but my sups names will be on it as well. Now, shouldn't they take a more active role rather than just supervise me and guide me? Or am I wanting too much?
Yeah, I can see your point. She may look like the guilty party if she denies it whereas if she acts now, they'll know it was a genuine mistake from her part and she is trying to fix it.
We're at different unis and I'm not sure what the support is like there. Saying that, I've told her that it's her decision to make and all I can do is provide her with ideas/different angles.
