I don't know what stage you're at, but your supervisor might think its too distracting for your research, the group doesn't have the money to send everyone (though if you're Research Council funded then there is a small amount of conference money, though its only £150 a year - certainly not enough for New Zealand!), or its just slipped his mind. No harm in asking...
At the moment, 3. and 4. is an awful lot...
So, how long is this poll going to run for?
Yep, your supervisor should give you a little guidance to start you off - maybe asking for a report on the general field, and then asking you to focus on a few issues. I remember that first day though, feels quite strange! Good to go to some lab events and get to know people.

I use a whiteboard with tasks to do, ideas etc. Its very satisfying when you wipe something off!
