Working with book publishers
T

Publishers prefer Professors and established people from established places. They also do not like controversial work. Try self publishing- you can at least then update it. see a Many publishers do not even reply- despite having your work for 4 months- so you did well. Some ask others to write it. Also--- I hate criteria-- if you have an original piece of work, well structured, they should recognise it. It ought not to be about ticking boxes, delays so much development.

Working for a university

Sorry if I am negative. with a masters, publications and research and teaching experience it took me 10 years to gain SOME access- not even permanent. Universities (say) they like to know people- they are smallish teams and fear what students will be taught etc etc. Very narrow minded if you ask me but-. May not be the same in every field I know . Many unis , many of the staff all knew eachother prior eg worked in same place or were ex-students.Some research there if anybody can get access to do it? Yes- there are very few jobs. maybe 100 applicants, many Unis like new lecturers to have a PHD (another issue).Write to many unis- offer to do occassional sessions/ guest speaking.

NASTY PHD SUPERVISOR

Of course, it is sometimes the student who will not listen but it may also be supervisors and there needs to be some independent form of monitoring and support.

Yes I am afraid it is very hard to complain. There is a complaints body for Universities but they need records of every communication- which you will not have. Gaining a PHD is not all it is meant to be; it is if your face fits largely and if it suits the career ladder of your supervisor and the University remit (as suggested by Beefy) . You may even be expected to use methods or sample sizes that are unsuited for your research.Yet people who have a pHD have their work published more easily . people without a PHD still have contributions to make and a lot more practical experience and independent thought at times.

Hi. I am afraid gaining a PHD depends on how all individuals fit in (as much as anything else). There needs to be an independent representative body to support and advise students. Having a PHD is becoming meaningless- it does not mean people are more clever but means they fit criteria and jump through hoops. I know many who are very clever- without a PHD.In my experience, changing supervisors means going to head of dept-- to be told there is no on else. Even the inspection body for Universities cannot advise . Students need to keep everything in writing. A very sad system we have here with restricted thought.

PHD supervision
T

Hi. This will also apply to post doc students. I wish to know as a consequence of joining this forum, how many students have had issues with supervision that have been largely unresolved? Just considering something. Thanks.

quit ! no supervision

I am so disheartened by what I read re PHDs. It is if your face fits-- as a colleague of mine was actually told by One Uni. A PHD is a club-- if they let you in; fine.If they do not like you-- they oppose your ideas, even say they are wrong when the facts are correct; give them to someone else or tell you they are pointless.I wonder what some highly established academics are so frightened of? I do better alone.I myself left but did go higher up on a few occasions. Suggest all students keep notes of what they are told at every meeting; any communication and involve the higher academic. At one time, a PHD was given to the most highly academic. Not anymore I am afraid.

I should seek a second opinion and inform somebody higher up. You should not just have to leave as I did.

self funded how to contact supervisor

Hi. Try to find a supervisor who is interested / specialised in your field.Do not give too much info- I had an idea taken and given to another student. Also find the right Uni-- the review done by their ethics committee is important and they need to agree with your approach. I emailed them in the past; some I knew already. Just tell them the broad subject that interests you. they will ask to meet you if interested. You do not need to do it where you live. Can be done via email or occassional meetings. Thanks.

Very difficult. I had 3 goes at PHD and left due
to supervision and disagreements with reviewers. I know I am capable but now
choose to write books alone. PhD is all about meeting criteria and fitting
through hoops. They seem to stunt individual thought. Academics need to be more
flexible.

Try copyright registration; not too expensive. There are companies online. Essential for all PHD work and publications. Thanks.
